Autumn 1 - Spectacular Spain

Game creators!

As our final piece of work for our science topic this half term, we had been asked by Hasbro Gaming to plan, design and make a new game lthe use if magnets for their new range of science themed games. We had a fun morning producing our games! However, we were only given a budget of £1.50 to spend on equipment so careful planning was essential! Ask your child about the game they designed and made.

Churros Cooking

Year 3 have been busy in the school kitchen making tasty Spanish churros. They have learnt about the importance of food hygiene when cooking and have had to read scales to measure out their ingredients. They were even excited to do the washing up! Here's our churros recipe for you to try at home.

Ingredients

  • 200 ml  water
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 120 g plain flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1tsp vanilla extract
  • granulated sugar
  • cinnamon

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 190°C.
  2. Line a baking sheet with baking paper.
  3. Mix the water, butter, brown sugar and salt in a medium saucepan. Cook over medium-high heat until the butter is melted and the mixture starts to boil.
  4. Remove from heat. Using a wooden spoon, stir in flour. Let cool for 5 minutes.
  5. Whisk eggs and vanilla in a small bowl. Add to the dough and stir. Transfer the dough to a piping (sandwich) bag and cut the end off.
  6. Pipe the dough onto the prepared baking sheet to make 12 churros, each 10cm long.
  7. Bake the churros, turning once halfway, until puffed and browned, 25 to 30 minutes.
  8. Roll the hot churros in Miss Morecroft’s sugar and cinnamon mixture and transfer to a wire rack to cool for 10 minutes.

Picasso Portraits

This week, Year 3 have looked at another famous Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso. We have learnt about cubism for which Picasso is famous for and have had a go at creating our own portraits in this style!

Fantastic Fact Files

This week, Year 3 have been busy researching and creating fact files all about Spain. We have looked at locating Spain on different maps, have learnt about traditional Spanish food and plenty more! The children have produced some fantastic work. Here's a few for you to read at home.

Mosaic Madness

We have been busy this week in Creative Curriculum finishing off our Gaudi inspired mosaic animals to join the famous dragon in Park Güell, Barcelona. The children have also looked at expressing their opinions about Gaudi's different works of art. Keep up the great work Aslans!

Today we welcomed Beth Dobbin to Walkley. What an inspiration!

Super Spanish

¡Hola!

Aslans have made a fantastic start with their Spanish this term. We have been practising how to say numbers 1-10 by playing games such as silent number and number detectives. Maybe you could play these games at home?

Next week, we will be looking at Spanish greetings.

First week back

We have had a great week getting to know the children in the Aslan class and are really pleased with the way children have settled in to the learning zone. We hope all the children have a good rest over the weekend ready for us to start our new creative curriculum and science topics next week. Thank you to all the parents for the support they have shown to us in this first week.
