Art and Design

At Walkley, we aim to encourage pupils to see art as a means of self-expression and to develop an awareness of the world around them. Our vision is that every child at Walkley will experience different mediums and techniques used by a wide variety of artists, designers, craft makers and sculptors from across the globe and throughout history. Pupils are involved in thinking critically about creative works and provided with opportunities to reflect on how it shapes history and contributes to culture, creativity and wealth of different nations across the globe.

The main aims of our art and design curriculum are:

To enable pupils to record from first-hand experience and from imagination, and to select their own ideas to use in their work.

  • To develop creativity and imagination through a range of complex activities.
  • To improve pupils’ ability to control materials, tools and techniques.
  • To increase their critical awareness of the roles and purposes of art and design in different times and cultures.
  • To develop increasing confidence in the use of visual and tactile elements and materials.
  • To foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers.

The key learning delivered and assessed in art and design covers the areas of:

  • to develop ideas
  • to master techniques (including painting, collage, sculpture, drawing, paint and textiles)
  • to take inspiration from the great (modern and classics)
