Autumn 2 Hola Mexico

- Week 1 -

** Feliz dia de los Muertos Year 3 **

The children have enjoyed a fantastic first day back celebrating the Mexican festival 'Day of the Dead'. They have been busy in the school kitchen making ancient Maya hot chocolate, writing recipes for others to enjoy, creating colourful Papel Picado style wax paintings to decorate our classrooms and constructing 3D hanging calacas (sugar skulls).

Forest School

In forest schools, we have been acting out the story of the Christopher Columbus as he set sail and later arrived in what he thought was 'India'. We were so impressed with the children's creativity in using the objects found around the forest school as props for their story. We had sticks as telescope, benches as treasure chests and  leaves as compasses.

Despite the heavy rain (and local flooding!), we braved the weather to carry out some observational drawings of the autumn leaves. The children will continue to develop their sketching skills throughout the year.

- Week 2 -

In maths, we have moved on to our new unit Multiplication and Division. The children have been exploring arrays using 1s and 10s counters to develop their understanding of related number sentences eg. 3 x 4 = 12 so 3 x 40 = 120. They have then moved on to making groups of a 2-digit number using Base10 leading up to grid method multiplication.

In creative curriculum, we have been learning all about Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. We have been collecting ideas in our sketchbooks as well as practising sketching self-portraits before we create our final piece of artwork.

- Week 7 -

This week, we have been reading the Mexican folk story 'The Legend of the Poinsettia'. We have been learning how to draw our own Poinsettia in art and will be finding out more about this Christmas plant in order to write an information text. We will also be looking at the symmetry of a poinsettia plant in maths.
