Guided reading for week beginning 27/04/2020

As part of Walkley Primary's expanding online learning program, there will be a weekly guided reading text with three different tasks based around the text.

Guided reading groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 should read the text titled "the slug"

Guided reading group 5 should read the text titled "Antartica"

Our first step to success in guided reading is, you guessed it, reading the text!

You should read the text independently. After you have read the text once, re-read it and underline any tricky words or phrases you are not sure on. When you have underlined any tricky words or phrases, if possible, ask somebody else to read the text to you, and have a discussion about the words or phrases you are unsure of.

If you do not have a printer, just write the tricky words/phrases down on a piece of paper.

If you are working independently, grab a dictionary and find the tricky vocabulary in that or use the internet.

If using the internet simply type the word or phrase into the search bar followed by the word "definition".

For example, if the tricky word was "involuntary" you would type: "involuntary definition" into the internet search bar.

Tasks for "the slug"

Attached below are the three daily tasks for "the slug". You should aim to complete one of these on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I have made the task slips in the same format as you would be used to seeing in class.

Day three is a familiar one. I have listed some ambitious vocabulary or phrases, your task is to write the definitions of these words.

When you have completed that, find five more examples of ambitious vocabulary or phrases in the text and write the definitions of these down. You have done this style of task many times in class!

Day four tasks is a creative writing task, where you get to be the slug!

Day five is the chance to be the illustrator of the text.

Tasks for Antartica text

Attached below are the three daily tasks for "the slug". You should aim to complete one of these on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I have made the task slips in the same format as you would be used to seeing in class.

Day three is questions about the text. Remember to read the questions carefully, and re-read the text to find the answer. The answers to the questions are also attached so you can independently mark your work.

Day fours task is a familiar one. Can you write the definition of these key words from the text? If you fancy a challenge, can you write these words in a NEW sentence which shows your understanding on the word.

Day five is all about using your writing skills to show of your knowledge of the amazing continent of Antarctica. Write a few paragraphs about all you have learnt from the text. If you want to check your spelling, punctuation and grammar, type up your paragraphs into Microsoft word or a similar program. They automatically check for any errors!
