Emotional Thermometer

We encourage children to notice their feelings on the thermometer using known 'zones of regulation' so we can support them to avoid this escalating to the Red and Blue ends of the thermometer. Where children are in the Yellow zone we encourage them to enable their emotional toolkit, independently, with a partner or adult to help and support them to move towards the Green window of tolerance and into the 'Learning Zone'.

What can I do at home?

Some questions you could ask you child are:

“Can you show me where you are on the thermometer? Point to the part that shows me how you’re feeling at the moment.”

“What's happened that has placed you here?”

If your child states they are in the yellow zone, heading to the Red or the Blue:

“Is there anything I can do to help?” (some might want a hug, or to talk or just by having told you how they feel is enough).
