Autumn 1 - Surviving the Stone Age

Week 8

In art this week, we designed our final pieces and then used charcoal and chalk pastels to create our captivating cave art. I'm sure you will agree that they look amazing! Please take a look at the PDF file to see them all.

In maths we have now introduced the expanded column addition method. We used Base10 to practice this method and then moved onto the formal written calculation. We will be practising this method A LOT so please ask your child to explain it to you for future maths homework.

In computing, we used the chrome books to create posters using Google Slides. We inserted text and images and used word art to make our title stand out. We combined our computing curriculum with our learning about friendship in citizenship and made beautiful posters explaining what friendship is all about.

Week 7

In Science we have been learning about magnets. We tested different materials to check if they were magnetic of not. We then compiled and recorded our findings.

In PE we have continued with our fundamentals of skipping, jumping and hopping. We played lots of different games to practise these skills.

Week 6

In English we have been planning our Stone Age poems. We shared ideas as to how to transform 'The Sound Collector' by Roger McGough into Sounds of the Stone Age.

In art this week, we experimented using charcoal to add texture to Stone Age animals.

In computing we started using the Chrome books for the first time in Y3! We learned how to log on by ourselves and then used Google Classroom to access our computing curriculum. Thank you to everyone who has already taught their child to log on at home. It is so helpful for their learning in the classroom!

To help us stay safe and communicate our needs more clearly, we have been learning this song as part of our Citizenship curriculum. We will continue discussing kindness, friendships and boundaries.

Week 5

This week in history we have been archaeologists exploring an exciting Stone Age excavation site. We carefully dusted the artefacts and then discussed what they might have been, who might have used them and what period of the stone age they were from.

We have had a very gruelling time in forest school 'surviving the stone age'. We learned how to brave the elements and then we decorated our cave walls using chalk pastels to replicate the cave of hands in Argentina.

It is national Poetry day on Thursday and to celebrate this, we learned a poem by Michael Rosen called 'I was Born in the Stone Age.'

In maths this week, we have been learning about flexible partitioning. We used Base10 and worked in teams to partition numbers. We then thought about other ways that we could 'split' the whole.

In History, we used what we had learned from our Stone Age day workshops to help us create timelines of the 3 major parts of the Stone Age and explain the changes that happened.

In reading, we have been looking at the book, 24 Hours in the Stone Age. We looked at how words are connected in the text and worked together to find words with similar meaning or words that gave further explanation.

What a fantastic day 'Stone Age Day' was. We learned so much and had a great time! We are all now Stone Age experts! Thank you to all the efforts made with costumes. The children looked amazing!

In art this week, we travelled back in time to the discovery of the prehistoric art of Lascaux cave. We imagined how it would feel to discover such an incredible sight and discussed how we thought the art might have been produced and which prehistoric animals were represented in the cave. We are looking forward to creating our own cave art over the next few weeks.

In RE this week, we discussed the significance of light during the Hindo festival of Diwali. We discussed how Hindus celebrate and the significant Gods that are worshipped. We then made our own Diwali lanterns.

In English, we have been working on our Borrowers setting description. We took scramblled sentences and worked together to make them whole again and made sure that they made sense.

Week 2

In English, we have been looking in detail at our class book, The Borrowers, and thinking about how Borrowers might use everyday objects to create useful household appliances. We have worked creatively and collaboratively to design and make 'Borrower' contraptions.

We also had a very exciting assembly with Mr Wallis and the Walkley Sorting Hat where the children found out which of our four houses (Porter, Rivelin, Loxley and Sheaf) they were in!

In PE we have been practising our skipping skills. We practiced balancing and jumping and then put these together to work on skipping.

In History, we have been thinking about our own timelines, to help us to understand how time is mesured. We thought about significant events in our lives and chronicled these.

In computing we thought about how the Borrowers might fit in their tiny living room and drew the characters in the setting using Doodle Buddy.

Week 1

Welcome back! What a fantastic start the Borrowers have had. We have had lots of fun getting to know each other and our new classroom. 

On the first day we had a Book Cafe where we shared all of our new books and explored the amazing library that we have in the Borrowers. We talked about who had already read some of the Y3 Recommended reads and had  the chance to chat about books.

We also worked on our team work skills in our first PE lesson. We got the parachute out and enjoyed lots of different activities that relied on us working as a team.

We looked at the book 'Mixed' and agreed that we are so lucky to come to a school full of amazing, unique individuals. We did some fantastic art work around the book.
