Autumn 1

- Week 1 -

W E L C O M E   T O   Y 6 !

Our new classroom is filled with a huge variety of books for children to read. We enjoyed exploring and choosing our first read for the year - it was hard to pick just one! We also made origami Stella bookmarks (Michael's dog!) ready for all the books we're going to read this year! If you would like to have a go at making a different animal at home, click HERE to watch the video tutorial.

Art - Paul Nash

This week in Art we’ve been looking Paul Nash: A landscape artist who was on the front lines during WW1. We looked a range of his paintings and analysed what we could see and how they made us feel. Here are some examples of our double page spreads we created.

Science

In Science this half term, Year 6 have been learning all about electricity! We've explored how to build simple circuits using wires, batteries, bulbs, buzzers, and switches. It was exciting to see how everything connects to make a circuit work. We also learnt the correct scientific symbols for each part of a circuit and practised drawing our own circuit diagrams.

History

In History, we have been exploring how technology changed during World War I and the huge impact it had on the way the war was fought. One of our activities this week was sorting different technologies between the 19th and 20th centuries, such as rifles, tanks, and the uniforms worn. We discovered how new inventions like machine guns, airplanes, and tanks changed warfare and made WWI very different from previous wars.

Art

Over the past two weeks we have studied the art work of Horace Pippin and Paul Nash. This week we had a skill development lesson where we applied a ‘splash of red’ to our sketchbooks. Using different techniques and colour mixing we painted our own poppies.

History Van

Today, History Van came into school to deliver an exciting World War II workshop. We learnt all about what life was like in England during the war. We learnt how people managed with rationing and had to make the most of the little food and resources they had. We also looked at how Sheffield was bombed during the Blitz and learnt about how families protected themselves by building Anderson shelters in their gardens. We even had a go at sending messages using Morse code, just like they did during the war!

As we dressed up as evacuees, we learnt about journey children from cities would have gone on. We tried to imagine what it must have felt like to pack a small suitcase, say goodbye and leave to the countryside.  We also made our own children’s toys using limited materials, just as people did in wartime Britain. We even had to trade with each other to get the items we needed!
