Autumn 1

Thank you so much to everyone who took part in the optional 4 tasks for homework.

We even went to deliver the letters to Mr Wallis today (no photos as ipad was charging sorry!)

 

Also, thank you to everyone who has taken part in the spelling homework. Nearly every child has completed at least 4 weeks of homework and 19 children have completed this every week!

Year 1 Anansi 25 Glockenspiels "Hey You" In Music we have been listening to rap music from artists like "de la soul" "Will Smith" "Sugerhill Gang." We had a go at rapping and singing as well as playing our instrument. We had to use the C note in time with the rhythm

Year 1 Anansi Dance. We loved working our a routine to Golden from the smash hit film over the summer. We moved our bodies in lots of different ways!

We were so lucky to have our infant class reps come and visit us and read a story to half the class (whilst the others went dancing with Miss Burton)

In maths we have been rolling dice and turning these numbers into an addition sentence or changing it into a part, part whole diagram!

We are learing to count in 5s and we enjoy singing this song to help us!

Anansi 2025 Shirley Hughes Poem Readings

After we created our Autumn Poems we asked anyone who wanted to, to perform them. We hope you love them!

In science we explored how most animals eat, classifying them as omnivores, herbivores or carnivores. We had a great discussion in class about this and had lots of great ideas

In music we have been exploring how to use the glockenspiel. We know that a glockenspiel is metal and a xylophone is wooden. It’s really important to play the right note at the right time. We will hope to be able to do a performance of “hey you” next week.

In Anansi we like to use this song to reinforce bonds to 10

In RE this week we have continued our discussions about Christianity and creationism. We looked at what Christian’s believe God would want them to do to look after others. We discussed this and worked together in groups.

In maths this week we are learning about number bonds. This means finding the parts which make up numbers, such as 6 can be made of 4 and 2. We showed this by making a bus for children to get on and off in groups and recording the number sentences. Can you find all the number bonds for 6?

In art we put together all the previous learning this term to draw an animal in a colour which represented an emotion to us, using our favourite media which we had experimented with. Can you tell which emotion we represented?

In English, we have been getting ready to write our own autumn poems. We had a big talk about our favourite bits of autumn and then use some great describing words to describe, leaves, coats, boots, and trees.

In computing, we used the Charcoal app to create Anansi sons. Today we learned how to change the background colour and use different colours and pens to create the characters.

In geography we looked how maps are flat and not really representative of our school. We then tried to build a 3D version of our school building.

In science, we went on an animal hunt around our school. We had a thought about what animals we might see. Then we went outside, sat really quietly and found a crow, a gull, a ladybirds, an earwig and a magpie. Then we recorded our findings in our science book

In English we are learning about poems. We are reading Out and About by Shirley Hughes. We have learned off by heart the poem ‘wet’ and made up our own actions.

In maths this week we have learned about part whole models. We made our own using cubes. Can you talk about parts of the number 7?

In RE this week we worked in groups to decide which things were good for the environment and which things weren’t. We discussed how Christians believe we should look, after the world which God has created and how this is good advise for our planet too.

In art we experimented with using different media. We saw what happened when we pressed on hard or lightly. Which did you like using best, oil pastels, chalks, wax, pencil and pens.

Voting day! It was very exciting to go to vote for who we wanted to represent us in the school council.

In PE we had a go at learning how to skip. Lots of practice still needed. Who can have a go at home?

In science we have continued to classify animals into 6 different groups. We worked together to sort the animal toys and photos into different types.

Today we have been watching the year 6 candidate photos for the school council. We will have our election on Friday!

29/10/25. In computing we have been looking how we can use iPads to edit, manipulate and draw on top of photos. We worked collaboratively and learned how to ask for consent before we took each others photos.

In computing we carried on using the Charcoal app to create our own version of Anansi the Spider. We used different pens and colours to create our piece of art.

We had a go at sorting our animals into different groups. What is your favourite animal?

We have been planning our writing ready for next week. We are going to write the address on an envelope for a character from the Jolly Postman.

In maths we have been looking at the symbols = < > and exploring the terms equals, less than and greater than.

In geography, we were looking at compasses and maps. We went outside and follow the map around the whole of our school. We learned how to go north, east, south, west.

In English this week we had a special delivery to Anansi! What was inside our parcel? We then drew a huge map to show the places which the postman visited. Which was your favourite part?

Bob the Artist read by author and illustrator Marion Deuchars

Bob the bird is just like all his friends, apart from his skinny legs. When Bob is teased, he decides to try and change himself to fit in. But little does he know where all his efforts will lead him... An affirming picture book for age 3+ about the power of art and of being confident enough to be yourself.

In art we are looking at the author Marion Deuchars. We drew a bird called Bob in her style and thought about how different colours can give us different feelings. What colours made you feel different emotions?

Brilliant PE skills this week Anansi! Great fitness with jumping hurdles, weaving cones and jumping hoops! Which was your favourite?

RE we have been exploring creation and wondering about all the natural things we can find in forest school. We also had a great time to play.

In geography, we have been looking at maps and symbols on maps.

This week we have been fishing at Forest School. We have been tying string to sticks.

In maths this week we are learning to read number words and to count out the correct amount to match. We also practised counting backwards from 20 and in 10s to 100, can you do this at home?

In RE this week we learned the Christian bible story of creation. We ordered the story and retold it in our groups.

Wow what amazing artists you are Anansi! We loved our first forest school today. We made our own artwork with other, using things in nature, what did you use?

12/9/25 English. Today we have been exploring adjectives and putting them in adjective clouds. We used adjective to describe mean falcon, hungry fish and cheeky Anansi.

10/9/25 Geography. Today we have been looking at different maps and seeing if we can identify the UK, England, South Yorkshire, Sheffield and Walkley. We also had an explore around the world on Google Maps.

10/9/25 English: We acted out the story and pretended to be the characters from the story.

9.9.26 In PE we are learning fundamentals of fitness. We practised running safely at different speeds. How do we keep safe in PE? How did our body change when we exercised?

In RE today we thought about creation and how Christians believe that God created the world. What did you create? Did you feel proud of it?

In maths today we sorted objects into groups. We looked at sorting by colour, shape, size.what did you sort by? Can you sort something at home?

Welcome to Anansi class! We have loved getting to know you all and playing with you today. We have learned everyone’s names and designed our own peg and drawer labels as well as learning the rules and routines of year 1!
