Welcome Year 5 Hiccups!
What an amazing first week back we’ve had! From map drawing, to shield making and team building, this week has been jam packed full of different activities and time for us to settle in to the Hiccups classroom.
I can’t wait to see what great experiences this year is yet to bring for us all!
We found dragon eggs in our classroom!
All our activities this week were based on our class book, How to Train your Dragon, by Cressida Cowell.
In the book, Hiccup, a young boy, needs to pass a series of tests as part of viking initiation to become a true Viking!
His first test is to catch and train a dragon. Unfortunately we couldn’t get real dragons in our classroom, but we did have dragon eggs! Our task was to package the eggs up safely, so we could drop them without them cracking. If the egg didn’t crack then we became true vikings!
In computing this week we learned the difference between the internet and the World Wide Web and discussed how to search the web safely. We then used the chromebooks to research the history of the World Wide Web using BBC bitesize.
In PE we are learning the skills to play netball. We have practised chest passes, over head passes and shoulder passes, remembering not to run with the ball!
Our new focus in English is writing instructions for How To Train a Dragon! We began the unit by following some instructions to see what makes them clear and easy to understand. We followed instructions to make origami dragon claws!
In RE we looked at some Christian artwork representing the Holy Trinity, we discussed the different symbols and meanings hidden in the artwork.
In science we tested electrical conductivity of different materials! We built circuits, then added different materials to see if it affected the brightness of the bulb - the brighter the bulb the better the conductor!
In art we practised our clay modelling skills this week! We used score and slip to build a coil pot.
In science this week we tested the solubility of different materials in water. We found that salt and sugar both dissolved to form solutions. Seeds and sand were insoluble.
This week the Hiccups visited King Edward VII Lower School for a science lesson!
We took part in lots of different experiments investigating physical and chemical changes including using the Bunsen burners!
