Autumn 1 Week 4

In maths, we consolidated our understanding of place value by looking at four-digit numbers represented in different formats, ordered them descending and ascending, and sorted them into odds and evens.

In Guided Reading , we have been looking at the front cover and the blurb of Matilda by Roald Dahl. The children have  been Observing, Wondering and Predicting , using the information on the front and back cover.

The children are doing their Golden writing for their chocolate bar advert. What a delightful calm atmosphere from the best class in the universe!

In our Guided Reading, we are focusing on children practising their oracular, that is reading to an audience. The children are reading Matilda in pairs and focusing on expression and fluency.

In our History, we have been discussing why the Roman Empire was so successful. One reason is the army was so well trained. The children practised marching, creating a Roman shield wall called the tortoise formation and reenacting a battle.

In our Literacy lesson, the children have been unscrambling sentences, that is putting the words in the right order. See the video below.

Autumn 1, Week 1

Wow! What a great first three days of Year 4 in the Charlies!

We have had some fantastic discussions, begun to explore our class book, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl (we're 10 chapters in already) and made a start on our Art, RE and Science learning journeys. We have some very confident, expressive readers who have been willing to share their reading out loud. We have also dipped our toes into a short piece of writing, CLIC and TTRS in maths, making book marks in D&T, spellings, PE...we've certainly hit the ground running!

There are some pictures below of children reflecting on some pieces of art by our featured artist for this half term, David Hockney.

Miss Michie, Miss Whitaker, Mr Rist and Mr Gamage are all very excited for what the year ahead is going to bring. Thank you, Charlies, for your willingness to "have a go" and for your patience whilst we become more reliable in matching faces to names!
