Autumn 1

Week 1

We had a super first week in Aslan class. We did lots of activities to help get to know each other, settle in and explore our class book ‘The lion, the witch and the wardrobe.’ We particularly enjoyed mixing watercolours to create our lion portraits and building towers with spaghetti.

Week 2

In History, we have been thinking about our own timelines, to help us to understand how time is measured . We thought about significant events in our lives and chronicled these.

We had lots of fun in Science thinking about how we could make objects move, stop moving, change direction and change shape.

In PE we are building up fundamental movement skills to improve our agility, speed and coordination. We practiced balancing on a skipping rope and jumping in a controlled manner.

We have been busy in Maths using equipment to make numbers and to partition numbers.

Week 3

We had such a fantastic day on Monday learning about the Stone Age and how people managed to survive. We looked at ways to hunt and gather food, and ways to keep warm.

We crushed chalk and mixed it with water to make paint and we made a shell necklace.

We also found about people beginning to settle and farm. We built fences and milked a ‘cow’ and even made spears for hunting.

In maths this week, we have been learning about flexible partitioning. We used Base10 and worked in partners to partition numbers. We then thought about other ways that we could 'split' the whole.

In art this week, we travelled back in time to the discovery of the prehistoric art of Lascaux cave. We imagined how it would feel to discover such an incredible sight and discussed how we thought the art might have been produced and which prehistoric animals were represented in the cave. We are looking forward to creating our own cave art over the next few weeks.

Week 4

We had our first violin lesson on Monday! It was very exciting. We found out the names of the different parts of the violin, how to hold it and how to pluck the strings.

In reading we have been looking at the book ‘24 Hours in the Stone Age’. We looked at how words are connected in the text and worked in groups to find words that linked together.

We have been working really hard in English this week, writing narratives about Lucy discovering Narnia at the back of the wardrobe. The children have produced some fantastic pieces of writing. Here they are sorting some muddled sentences as a little break from writing!

Week 5

This week in history we have been archaeologists exploring an exciting Stone Age excavation site. We carefully dusted the artefacts and then discussed what they might have been, who might have used them and what period of the stone age they were from

We worked in partners to unscrambled sentences from Stone Age Boy.

We had a great time out in ‘the forest’. We did some art using pastels based on the cave of hands which is in Argentina.

We also did some drama, acting out the beginning of Stone Age Boy.

We did some Science experimenting with magnets while we were outside. We tested different materials to see which were magnetic and we used our magnets to make compasses.

We even had a bit of time to create lion collage pictures, make some bug hotels and build dens.

In English we have been doing lots of work on the book ‘Stone Age Boy’. Here we put the events of the story into a story mountain and practised telling the story to each other.
