Autumn 1

Week 6

In Computing we finally completed our wanted posters by adding our own photographs of hedgehog toys, resizing them and removing the background. Great sharing, teamwork and word processing skills all!

In History we are continuing to learn about the great inventions from the last 150 years. Please enjoy this song which celebrates inventors of transport!

In PE, we practised our skipping skills. Some of us challeneged ourselves by skipping backwards, hopping while skipping and trying a move called, "The twister"!

In English, we have been looking at the book, "Scaredy Squirrel Makes A Friend" and then writing our own set of instructions about how to make friends with an animal of our choice.

Here are some examples of our write. Tomorrow, the children will reread their writing, edit it and correct spelling and grammar with a green pen.

Week 5

In Computing, we have nearly finished our missing posters. We typed up our writing using the correct case, changed the font style, colour and added underlines. Finally, we inserted photos and resized them. The children worked in pairs and did a terrific job!

Spelling

We practiced our spelling by rearranging our jumbled words. Super work everyone!

Great knowledge of the alphabet and good ordering skills can be seen here!

In History, we looked at the invention of the airplane by the Wright brothers in 1907. In our lesson we looked at different types of historical evidence which prove that the flights took place. We looked at black and white photos of the actual flight, pictures of the real plane which is now in a museum, telegrams and newspaper headlines from 1907.

In English, we are planning a write based on the story "Scaredy Squirrel Makes and Friend". We will write instructions on how Scaredy can be friends with an animal. In this lesson, we practised sentence structures and using the conjunction "but" by unscrambling sentences. Please take a look at the children successfully building the sentences!

In Art, we started to make our sculpture designs inspired by Yayoi Kusama. The children were full of excitement and creativity. Next week we will finish the sculptures and start to decorate the "room" (shoebox) which the sculpture will be housed in to create an immersive piece of art!

In PE we continued our target games topic by throwing balls into hoops and playing "The last one standing" dodgeball game!

On Friday we elected year 6s into the school council. The children listened to their recorded speeches carefully throughout the week and so had a clear idea who they were voting for at the ballot box!

Unfortunately due to the rain, we had to do PE indoors. We decided to do yoga but not any old yoga. We did minecraft yoga!

Week 4

Day 3 of forest school consisted of more map reading work where we put together different "funny faces" and we had a go at handling a compass, finding magnetic north and then finding south, east and west. Some children enjoyed making hedgehogs in the grounds using sticks too!

In our fundamentals PE lesson we looked at hopping on one leg and jumping from a standing position. The children did a great job of bending their knees and keeping their balance while doing a series of different drills.

In day 2 of forest school we did a couple of geography activities. The first was to look at a map of the school and satelitte images and then make a 3D map of our area. We used a piece of wood to represent the main building and then marked other key areas such as the trim trail, yards, car park and road using sticks and leaves. The second activity was an orienteering drill where the children had to look at the birds eye view of a "face map" with a map key and then build it using hoops, bean bags, rings and cones. Great team work, and excitement were on display!

We used the key note app today in computing to type up our super missing posters about Max the poor hedgehog. Please have a look! Next week we will add images.

Literacy

we have started to look at instructions. We talked about why instructions ate important and when we might use them. We looked at and identified all the different features of instructional texts. We organised some jumbled instructions and labelled the features. We then had a go at following the steps to draw a hedgehog.

Maths

in maths we partitioned numbers using dienes. We then put these numbers into a number sentence. Some great partner work today, well done!

Science

in science we are learning about living things and their habitats. We sorted pictures into things that were living, dead and those that had never been alive. The class worked really well and we had lots of great discussions.

In day 1 of forest school we built dens for a hedgehog and played communication games with the parachute where we had to work as a team to direct a ball to a specific person. We all had a great time in the crisp, early autumn weather!

In PE we continued our target games topic by looking at the sport of golf. We looked at how to putt using a putter club. We focused on our sideways stance, bending our knees and looking at both the ball and the target. We also practised using more force if the target is further away. Great job all!

We had a super time enjoying our classwide reward of making pizza. The children were brilliant at following instructions and trying out new food like black olives. Please have a look at these delicious culinary creations!

Week 3

In English we were unscrambling sentences which used the conjunctions "and" and "but". We then wrote the corrected sentences in our books. Later on we will write our missing posters on poor Max the hedgehog and will share them with you!

In art today we practised handling and using plasticine. We rolled, pinched, pulled, smoothed and used tools to create some brilliant sculptures which were either animals, vegetables, fruits or plants.

Some of our class were exploring different textures and making patterns in the sand with their fingers.

In PE we continued our target games topic. In this lesson we focused on throwing underarm and overarm. We threw bean bags, quoits, basketballs and foam balls into different targets and thought about when to use the powerful overarm throw. Well done everyone for their enthusiasm and for making big improvements in throwing accuracy within the lesson!

In history this week we are learning about the invention of the telephone. We learnt about how Alexander Graham Bell, in 1876, finally made the first successful telephone call to his partner Dr Watson. We looked at how the world changed after this invention and how phones have changed so much throughout the years. Here are the children looking at some examples of phones from the 20th and 21st centuries!

In computing we used word processing skills to make and edit an invite for Max the hedgehog. The children did a great job changing the style, size and colour of the font and added underlines and bold.

Get the Latest Phone from Alexander Graham Bell | Horrible Histories

The life and work of Alexander Graham Bell (dramatisation) | History - True Stories

Suitable for teaching 5-11s. Alexander Graham Bell tells the story of his life and describes how he invented the telephone.

Some of our children were working on their gross motor skills and movement in the creative zone. Well done for twisting and moving so well!

In PE on Friday we looked at jumping techniques in our "Fundamentals" lesson. We focused on bending our knees and using our arms to swing and create momentum and power.

Here are some brilliant examples of our missing poster for Max the hedgehog!

Week 2

In English, we are planning to write a missing poster about Max the hedgehog. Here are the class immersing themselves in the Hodgeheg story, going on a search for Max and pretending to be a "Woodland TV" reporter giving a description of the poor, lost animal.

In PE the other term's topic is "Target Games". We talked about examples of target games like dodgeball, bowling, archery and golf where you need to hit or get near different targets and avoid obstacles. In this lesson we practised rolling a ball and improved our technique to be able to hit various targets from different distances. We used basketballs, footballs, tennis balls and sponge balls very sensibily and needed to consider how much power we needed to use to get near or hit the target. The children used good stances, bent their knees and used their non-throwing hand to point towards the target. Well done all for your bull's eye accuracy!

In math today, we looked at tens and ones. We built numbers using base ten sticks and noted down which tens and ones built the number.

On Friday we continued our "Fundamentals" PE topic. We looked at how to sprint and change direction today. Here are the children playing a cone flipping game and a chase race!

Week 1

Welcome to the Hodgehegs all! We have had a lovely few days getting to know one another, settling into different routines and beginning our topics in different subjects. The class have come in with such a brilliant attitude and have impressed us all with their manners, curiosity and eagerness to learn more. We have done a lot in citizenship lessons about "What makes a good school?", "What are push ups and kind words?" and discussed about friendship.

In maths we have started our "Place Value" topic. So far we have found the 5 in different numbers such as 5 + 3 = 8 or 5 + 1 = 6. We have also made numbers using different combinations. For example, we counted to 100 in tens using base ten sticks and investigated different ways to make 10 and 20. Well done all for great team work and counting skills!

In PE, one of the topics we are doing is "PE fundamentals". Today we looked at how we can run faster. We learnt that there are 3 key things:1. Long strides 2. Run on your toes. 3. Move your arms pocket to mouth. Here are the children doing a great job following these three points.

In maths, we continued to look at place value and build numbers. This time we built numbers all the way to 100. We were blown away by the children's confidence and enthusiasm to take on challenges.

Some of our children went up stairs to the creative room where they worked on their fine motor skills. They did such a great job settling in to new surroundings.
