Autumn 2

Week five

It has been another busy week in Aslan class. As well as fitting in some assessments we have been working hard to learn the songs for the y3/4 play and rehearsing with the y4s.

In art we have been looking in more detail at the backgrounds in Frida Kahlos self-portraits. We have been learning to use powder paints and how to use primary colours to make many shades of green and brown. Here we are having a go at a tonal wash.

We had a lovely session reading with our y6 buddies this week.

Week four

We had a great time in the Forest school. We used natural (mostly!) materials to recreate some of Frida Kahlo’s self-portraits and we also tried to imitate her by exaggerating our eyebrows and putting on our most serious expressions.

We also had our reward party in the forest. We made dens and bug hotels and enjoyed some hot chocolate.

Week three

In English, we have just started a biography of Frida Kahlo. We read the book, Little People Big Dreams: Frida Kahlo and used it to create a timeline of her major life events. Tomorrow we will be looking at the book, A Portrait of an Artist: Frida Kahlo by Lucy Brownridge to analyse how Frida used colour and symbolism to express her emotions.

Weeks one and two

This half term, we have launched our Walkley Reading Buddies! We enjoyed getting to know each other and sharing stories in our first session. The Y6s are taking on the important role of mentoring our Y3 readers, listening to them read their reading books first, before sharing a story together. This is a great way to build our reading community across school and we can’t wait for the next session!

In English we have been learning the poem ‘The Spider and the Fly’ which was originally written by Mary Howitt in 1828. We worked in groups to read and perform the poem.

We thought of arguments about why the fly should and should not go into the spiders web, and the ‘fly’ listened to them walking along a conscious alley.

We listened carefully to the way the spider described the fly as he complimented her. We used figurative language to describe the features of the fly, to flatter her in a similar way to the spider.

In maths we have been learning column subtraction. We worked together using place value counters, base ten and drawings to help us understand exchanges.

To show our support for anti-bullying week , lots of us wore odd socks on Wednesday:
