Autumn 2 World At War

- Week 1 -

In English, we have been exploring the 'The Piano' by Aidan Gibbons. After listening to the soundtrack and discussing how the music made us feel, we examined a series of items belonging to the main character in order to make predictions about the narrative. After watching the animation, we gathered the information learnt about this character through his contrasting flashbacks. We are looking forward to writing our own versions of this narrative, focusing on carefully selecting language to describe the character and the settings.

This half term, we have launched our Walkley Reading Buddies! We created bookmarks as a gift for our Y3 buddy and enjoyed getting to know each other and sharing stories in our first session. The Y6s are taking on the important role of mentoring our Y3 readers, listening to them read their reading books first, before sharing a story together. This is a great way to build our reading community across school and we can’t wait for the next session!

In Art, we have been creating our final pieces inspired by the artwork of Paul Nash and Horace Pippin. We will share the completed pieces soon!

We finished the week with an exciting online workshop with authors Katie and Kevin Tsang, and illustrator Viviane Schwarz to explore fantasy fiction, portal stories and magical creatures. We examined dragons, magic spells and potions contained within enchanting historical wonders from the British Library's bookshelves and considered examples of classic fantasy fiction from Narnia to Alice. Throughout the session, we took part in draw-alongs to help with creating imaginative illustrations to inspire ideas for our own fantasy tales.

- Week 2 -

In our History lesson, we have been studying the Battle of Britain. The children have looked at evidence as to why Germany lost the war. Look at the videos below for their opinions on this key question.

King Edwards Science lesson

Today, all the year 6s visited King Edwards lower school to take part in a science lesson. During the lesson, the children experimented with light using prisms and light boxes to separate the spectrum of light. The children also dissected an eyeball! They were able to remove the lens and identify the different parts of the eye. Well done Tygers on being super scientists!
