Spring 1

Week 1

This term in our provision, the children are working on their core strength and balance in the dance studio each morning. Well done all!

In History, we are learning about people who have positively changed the world. The children have really enjoyed this interactive history game by the BBC!

In English, we wrote and asked questions to the big, bad wolf from the Little Red story who argues that it was all a big misunderstanding and that he was just protecting Grandma from Little Red's awful toffees!

In PE, we are doing gymnastics this term. The children did a great job making various shapes and holding them for 10 seconds. Good posture everyone!

In computing, we are starting to learn about how to store information and make branch data bases. Here are the children using the website J2data to make fun Yes/No branch data bases for topics such as beach objects and jungle animals.

In English today, we were practising using the suffix "ing" with verbs. We looked at the key rules such as dropping the "e" and adding a double consonant if the root word has a bouncy short vowel sound. Here are the gang filling in their grammar tables very well!

In maths we have been exploring the vertices and faces of 3D shapes and looking at 2D symmetry. Here are the children exploring these topics.

Week 2

In Design and Technology, we built prototype toy cars in groups. The children did a great job experimenting with different sized wheels and learnt from their mistakes when lining up the axels and the chassis which will hold them. We then tested and retested until our cars moved in a smooth straight line. Next week, the children will build their own cars following the designs they have drawn.

In PE, we continued our gymnastics topic by focusing on balance. Here are the class holding positions for 10 seconds, climbing apparatus, balancing on beams and jumping off horses. Some of us got to go on the apparatus in a quieter session with Miss Mason and her team!

In maths we have started a new topic: Money! The children did a fab job exploring the different combinations to make 10p, 20p and 50p using UK coins.

In computing this week we made more branch data bases. This time we collected and displayed more data by storing more objects and thus more branches!

In Friday's PE lesson, we carried on our "Sending and Receiving" topic by looking at how to bowl and roll a ball. Here are the children using different sized balls and aiming for various targets.

Week 3

Lovely imaginative play happening upstairs with Miss Mason, Mr Butler and Miss Daughtry.

We battled the rain and had a go at side footed passing and receiving the ball in PE. Well done all!

In citizenship we have looking at the question "Who owns my body?" and of course the answer is "me!" We read the super book "Miles is the boss of his body" which looks at the need for people to ask permission before hugging or picking someone up and that if you don't like hugs, a wave or a handshake is fine. Here are the class writing down a list of trusted adults they feel comfortable speaking to if they are worried about anything.

Here are some of our children doing some sound and motor skills work in the creative zone.

Here is a funny song and dance about money and maths!

For our warm ups in gymnastics we like playing the super movers just for fun activities where you can do Spring Watch, Match of the Day and Blue Planet movement challenges. The children have asked for this to be on the blog so here you go!

Week 4

In maths today, we imagined we were in a shop buying supplies for a sea expedition. Here are the children choosing objects, paying with £30 and using subtraction to find the change.

Great maths going on up stairs with Miss Mason, Mr Barber and Miss Daughtry. The children are really enjoying the numicon and number blocks!

In DT, we have finally tested and finished our car designs. All the cars now move smoothly and straight thanks to having correct axles and wheels built into a chassis. The brief was to build a toy car for a 7 year old which was made from recycled materials and could move in a straight line when pushed. How do you think they did?

In maths we have been looking at doubles and "near doubles" where we can use our doubles knowledge and "add two more on". For example double 6 is double 5 plus 2. Here are the children using their Rekenreks to explore this further.

In PE today we could see children becoming much more confident on the various gymnastics equipment. Some children enjoyed a less crowded session where they also used a balance ball. Great enthusiasm and poise were on display!

In day 1 in forest school, we recounted the story of the "Three Little Pigs" in preparation for our write tomorrow and used actual straw, sticks and bits of brick. Great building and team work!

We reached another 100 classwide rewards so we voted for an "animal reward". We had a great time bringing in animal teddies, making animal art and dancing to animal songs!

In day 2 of forest school, we did a bit of cross country running with obstacles and worked for the Ministry of Magic measuring and collecting "wands"(They needed to be between 20cm to 30cm long). Back in the class, we painted them and we will take them home tomorrow!

In forest school day 3, we enjoyed drinking hot chocolate in the snow! Well done all for battling the elements this week.

Great dribbling, passing and ball control in PE today. Also,it was lovely to see everyone cheering on their team mates and giving lots of push ups!

Week 5

In maths, we have started our new topic "Multiplication and Division". We have been grouping different objects into equal amounts and understanding that  multiplication is repeated counting of the same number. Here are some great tunes to sing along to for helping with knowing the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

The Rosa Parks story (dramatisation) | History - True Stories

In History, we have been learning about the incredible Rosa Parks who stood up against segregation and racism using non-violent means. The children were amazed by her story and bravery and how thousands of people who supported her managed to help change a completely unfair law in 1956 in the USA. We wrote about the consequences of her bus boycott and made a timeline of her life.

🐺 The True Story of the Three Little Pigs 🐷 Kids Book Short Funny Read Aloud

The children have used inspiration from this book to write a newspaper report about the "Three Little Pigs". Please have a look at home!

Week 6

On Monday we used a range of sketch pencils such as HBs, 2Hs, 3Bs and 8Bs. We looked at how these pencils are graded by their hardness (H) and blackness (B). We experimented and realised that the higher number B pencils are darker and also softer which makes them easier to smudge. We looked at how to use different pencils to create shadow and texture. Here are the gang looking at sketches by Georgia O'Keefe and being inspired to have a go at trying to copy her delicate style.

How to use arrays to multiply | Maths - A World Without Maths

We have started to look at division this week and have used arrays to help us. This is a fun clip that looks how multiplication and division facts can be represented as arrays.

Lovely letters and sounds work going on up in the creative zone!

The children were very excited during their first recorders music lesson with the Sheffield Music Hub. They listened carefully, held the instrument correctly and did not toot at the wrong times!

In the creative zone, we have enjoyed dancing and using colourful scarves.

We have been doing some super work with colours and fine motor skills.
