Maths
In maths this week, we have been practicing subitising to 5. The children have enjoyed making their own subitising cards using paint pens, playing dice games and subitising in the environment.
Next, we looked at making number 5, 6 and 7 using dice frames and manipulatives. The children enjoyed using the Numicon to find out all the different ways to make 5 and dice frames to show different arrangements of numbers 6 and 7.
We have been focusing on the vocabulary of more and fewer. The children enjoyed comparing different classroom objects to see who had more and who had fewer. They could explain how they knew and understood that the objects could be a different colour and it did not change the outcome. They also enjoyed experimenting with which containers held more and less using the sand and water and completing data collection surveys around the classroom asking others about their favourite things.
Forest School
We have been looking at the changes of the seasons focusing on the signs of winter, noticing the bare trees and cold weather. The children have been practising putting their warm clothes on independently, zipping their coats up, changing their shoes and wearing their scarves and hats. They have also made bird feeders using biodegradable materials, hanging them on the trees to keep the birds happy.
African Drumming
As we have been comparing Africa and The Arctic we were lucky enough to be able to enjoy an African drumming workshop with Unbeatable Energy. The children loved having a go on the drums, singing and dancing. They were absolutely fantastic and really enjoyed showcasing their work at the performance at the end of the day! Thank you Steve, from Unbeatable Energy!
Art
We have been learning about the African artist Edward Tinga Tinga. The children have enjoyed learning how to draw African animals by following a step-by-step guide, painting in the style of Tinga Tinga and creating an African sunset. They have compared his work to Martin Ridley who we learnt about last term and talked about which work they prefer and why. We have also enjoyed watching some of the Tinga Tinga tales, inspired by the artists work.
Toothbrush Club
This term, we are taking part in the 'Toothbrush Club'. Each day the children will be brushing their teeth in school while learning about the importance of looking after their teeth and having a healthy diet.
Physical Development
The Caterpillars really enjoyed taking part in a tennis workshop where they worked in team to do some tennis drills. They really enjoyed cheering each other on, showing great team spirit!
Making Shadows
After reading the Gruffalo Child we decided to make our own shadow stick puppets using stencils. We then experimented making different sized shadows in the Gruffalo cave!
Thank you to all the grown-ups that came in to read with the children for our 'Reading Buddies' event. The children really enjoyed having you and sharing their stories with you. We look forward to inviting you back in to class next half term!
