Forest School
This half term The Chameleons retunred to forest school, we remembered our forest school rules and how to respect the area we are exploring. We explored the best ways to stay warm when you go outside in winter and tried our best to put on our hats and coats by ourself. We looked at habitats of woodland animals and tried to make our own versions as well as making different animal feeders.
We learnt about predator and prey animals and played a game of stuck in the mud where some of us were Arctic Foxes and the rest were Arctic Hares.
The Chameleons practiced their road safety at Forest School. We practiced looking both ways and using our walking feet to stay safe when we are crossing roads.
Science
As part of our topic of hot and cold we conducted a science experiment to see the fastest way to melt an ice cube. We put an ice cube in salt, in sugar, a plain ice cube and holding an ice cube. We observed the changing state of the icecubes and made predictions about which one would melt first.
Maths
In Maths the Chameleons have been looking at the compositions of numbers between 1 and 5. We looked at subitising dot patterns and we tried to spot the numbers instead of counting. We visulised the patterns and then tried to recreate them using our own dots.
As a class we used cubes to make our own set of number blocks, we worked together and used our 1-1 correspondence to make sure we had the right number of cubes for each number. When we got to the end we spotted that the numberblocks looked like a staircase pattern. We knew one of the numbers was missing if the step was too big to go up on the stairs.
We then used our subitising skills to spot the number on a die roll, we used this skill to play a track game, rolling a die to then jump that number of spaces along a track. We played as a whole class and then had a go by ourselves in choosing time.
We learnt a counting song to help us learn the different ways that 5 is composed. We sung 5 Little Speckled Frogs using puppets and dressing up. At different points in the song we worked out how many frogs were on the log and how many were swimming knowing that the whole amount is 5.
Art
We started this term by drawing our self portraits, we made sure we drew all the parts of our body and using the whole page to draw. Taking our time we drew ourselves and then wrote our name.
Tinga Tinga
Our new artist focus is Edward Tingatinga, an artist from Tanzania who created a new stlyle of art which is now known as Tinga Tinga. He uses lots of dots and bright colours in his paintings and paints African animals and settings. We experimented using cotton buds to make different patterns of dots and spots to use later in the half term.
Tennis Taster
The Chameleons went to a tennis taster session and got to try using a tennis racket to control a ball.
