Spring 2

Week 1

This term in Design and Technology (DT) we will design and make a glove puppet. The class researched and explored different glove puppets and drew a prototype design of a puppet for a 7 year old. In next few weeks well focus on learning how to sew and cut fabrics and we will keep you posted!

One of the topics for this term in PE is "Invasion Games". The chidren did a great job learning to attack, defend and keep posession in this session.

In computing we will learn about algorithms and how to program a robot this term. Here are the children getting experience using the bee-bots and using virtual bee-bots and Alex the robot ipad apps.

In RE we looked at the Christian event of "Holy Week". We acted out the key events such as Jesus arriving in Jerusalem with people greeting him with palm leaves. We then looked at how Jesus was arrested by Roman soldiers, how he was crucified and cruelly offered vinegar to drink when exhausted. Finally, we acted out the events at his tomb where Christains believe he rose again. The children were very respectful and enthusiastic!

Week 2

In PE we continued our invasion games topic by learning how to pass with a hockey stick, with your foot and how to roll a ball. We then did a posession game where you could not move when you had the ball and only roll it on the ground to your teammate. Great communication and finding space skills were on display by the end of the lesson.

In English, we are planning to write a persuasive letter inspired by the book, "The Day the Crayons Quit!" Here are the children reading this excellent book and thinking about which classroom items would be cross with us!

In Design and Technology, we made our prototype designs for our glove puppets out of paper. Instead of sewing fabric together, we used stables. This process has helped us a lot to understand how we will make our designs for real and to avoid common mistakes such as making the gloves too tight.

We had a blast on world book day. We had our usual reading lesson in RWI or Star Group, made our own books, listened to stories, had a book cafe and welcomed the Y5s to read to us. Well done all for your enthusiasm and showing your love for stories!

Week 3

The Hodgehegs did a great job assembling scrambled sentences which included adverbs. This is in preparation to writing our "Day The Crayons Quit" write!

In Citizenship, we continued to look at having a healthy "digital 5 a day" approach to screen time. Good discussions were had about how creative and active certain online activities can be e.g. Doing a youtube yoga class or making a stop motion film.

In PE, we did basketball skills where we learnt to driblle and pass. There was some really good team work on display and many children are getting much better at being graceful winners!

The children did a great job of creating algoriithms (A series of commands) to direct a bee bot robot. The children first wrote algorithms on paper and predicted where the robot would go to. Then then checked with a real robot and track if they were correct. Well done all for being correct but also quickly understanding if you had made an error and then providing the correct algorithm.

In Design and Technology, we did a focused task of learning how to sew two pieces of fabric together using a running stitch . The children showed great perseverance and team work to work together to learn this new skill. Next week we will begin to make our actual glove puppet designs!

Week 4

In Star group we have been reading about the incredible Greta Thunberg. Here is a super quiz to test your knowledge:

In English we have been writing a letter inspired by "The day the crayons quit". Here is an excellent quiz on this superb book:

The children have loved playing this coconut game to test their 5 times tables!

Finally, the children have enjoyed  the happy burger game and the times table cat game. Here it is:

At the beginning of the week we went to the forest school to make arrays which will help us with our multiplication, division and fraction work in maths. Great foraging of daisy flowers and sticks were on display!

In guided reading some of us were studying the super book "Greta and the Giants!" The children produced some brilliant protest signs to tell off the lumbering giants who have been destroying a forest in the book.

Later in the week, we went back to the forest school where we had a geography task. The children tried to make different natural landscapes such as a desert, cliff, mountain, jungle and forest using "little figures" and their ipads. As you can see they did a super job!

In DT the children did a great job choosing and then cutting fabric for their glove puppets. Next week we will sew the fabric together and decorated the glove using their design sketches.

Week 5

In computing, the children did a great job building their own tracks and obstacles and then making an algorithm to set a robot on the correct path. Great team work and problem solving all!

The children have written some brilliant speeches based on the book "Malala's magic Pencil". Here are the class performing their speeches with lots of dramtic actions!
