Our first piece of writing for this term will be a persuasive letter inspired by the crayons' grumpy letters in the magnificent "The Day the Crayons Quit" book.
Here are the class writing down what they think each crayon colour is feeling and what they are cross about!
In RE we are looking at why Easter is so important to Christians. Here are the class acting out Holy Week, with people waving their palm leaves to Jesus, Jesus being arrested, Jesus being cruelly offered vinegar when he was thirsty while carrying the cross and finally Jesus rising again from his tomb.

In art, the children did a super job sketching close up images of plants. This composition was inspired by Georgia O'Keefe's work and the children worked well using the different pencils like HB, 2B and 6B.
In English we continued to study the wonderful book, "The Day the Crayons Quit". This time we looked at different emotions such as anxious, exhausted and feeling unappreciated. The children then matched feeling cards to the correct crayon from the story. We also talked to each other about the different crayon's personlities and some of us acted out crayons from the story and the rest had to guess which colour they were!
Great construction, painting and making work going on up in the creative zone!
Week 2
The Hodgehegs did a great job playing B and A notes. Well done for listening so well to our Music Hub teacher.
Here are the class playing "Busy Beez"
In PE we are learning about "Invasion Games". We talked about how invasion games have attackers and defenders and that you need to score goals in the other team's half. Examples of invasion games are basketball, football, rugby and hockey. Examples of sports that are not invasion games are tennis, bowling, cricket and volleyball where you always stay in your area and never the oppositions. Here are the class learning to score goals with a hockey stick.
In computing we were inputting an algorithm (A series of commands) to direct a robot around a track to certain locations. We thought really carefully which way the robot was facing at certin points.
Super maths work up in the creative zone!
Happy World Book Day all! We had a great time listening to and reading stories. We also had a big debate on which is the best Y2 book we have read (It was voted as Toto: The ninja cat) and did some art where we made book covers of our favourite reads.
This term we are lucky to have Miss Birton teach dance. Here are the children following the choreography so well and training their bodies to balance better!
Week 3
In maths we have been learning and practising efficient written methods when adding and subtracting. Here are the children using the diamond/criss cross method, numberline and pictorial method. Lovely work all!
In Citizenship, we talked about how much screen time (on phones, TV, consoles) we have a day and how if we have too much it can make us feel low, irritated and tired. We then looked at The Children's Commission's recommendation of having a digital 5 a day. We talked about if we have screen time, we need to do something active afterwards. We also discussed about dong something creative, something kind to others and connecting with family and friends. Here are the class completing a pie chart and deciding if certain activities are part of a digital 5 a day.
In Computing we used paper "robots" today where we made predictions on where a bee bot would go on a track with many bases and obstacles. We used cards with commands on them to build an algorithm and got our team mates to check.
In PE today we continued our "Invasion Games" topic by playing a game similar to netball. Each team had 4 players with one being the "goal". A team could score if they managed to pass the ball to their "goal" without the other team intercepting. If you had the ball you could not move so it was up to other players to find space, communicate clearly and be ready to catch. During the session, we soon realised how important it is to communicate as a team, get organised when defending and being kind to our team mates when mistakes are made. Next week we will build on these skills and experiences when we do a similar game based on football.
Super dancing with scarfs happening up in the creative zone!
In Design and Technology we researched and explored examples of glove puppets because our project will be to sew and make a puppet for a 7 year old out of fabrics. Here are the class enjoying trying on a variety of puppets and looking closely at how they are made and what materials have been used.
Week 4
Today we were lucky to have the terrific writer and illustrator Bethan Woollvin who talked us through how she writes, read us her latest book, "Robin Hood" and showed us how to draw Robin too! The children loved listening to her, asked lots of questions and were amazed to find out she lives in Walkley!
In RE we have continued to learn about why Easter is so important to Christians. Today we looked at how Christians celebrate Easter Sunday with church services, meals, chocolate eggs and hot cross buns. In class we enjoyed a mini chocolate egg and a quarter of a hot cross bun!
In day 1 of Forest School we used our coding knowledge to direct a person around a course using an algorithm such as "Go forwards 6 steps. Then turn right. Go forward 8 steps. Then turn left. Go forward 2 steps and you are at the base." The children did well giving a set of instructions and following them. We also enjoyed doing teamwork tasks with the parachute where we needed to deliver a ball to a specific person and wait our turn to go underneath!
In English, we are immersing in our next project which is to write a speech inspired by Malala's Yousafzai's wonderful book "Malala's Magic Pencil". Here are the class putting images in order and retelling her story.
Terrific bridge building work!
In Y2 we are learning about the world's oceans. In the creative zone they are enjoying singing songs, sorting pictures and learning new words.
Five Oceans Song
In Forest School day 2 we did orienteering with 7 check points and built bridges out of wood which we could stand on!
In PE we continued our invasion games. We are getting better at finding space and communicating to our team mate. We also watched highlights from an England vs Australia women's netball game and that really helped us understand how quickly teammates can move to find space.
In day 3 of Forest school we did kick rounders with the Aeronauts. It was a tough game which ended 9- 9. A deserved draw for both classes! Also some children enjoyed playing with the parachute and going on a tour!
We had a cup cake class reward as we reached another hundred points! Bon appetit!
We wish a happy Eid to many of our class. We hope you have a lovely day with your families!

Happy Red Nose day all! We had a super time doing silly activities and donating money to this incredible charity. Here are the class putting the nose on the teacher with their eyes closed and designing their own red noses.
A Red Nose Day Taskmaster challenge. The Aeronauts completed the challenge in 2 minutes and 5 seconds. The Hodgehegs completed it in 1 minute 47 seconds!
Week 5
Today we finally got the chance to see our Lion cub statue which will be somewhere in Sheffield as part of the "Pride of Yorkshire Trail" fundraising event for Sheffield Children's hospital. Each child in the school was given a leaf to write or draw something which sums up Sheffield. Examples were "parks", "my mosque", "Ey Up!", "The Owls!" and "Green Hills". The children then helped stick them on the sculpture. We can not wait to see the finished item!
On Tuesday, the lovely folks at St Barts invited us to an Easter event. We had a super time hearing about the Easter story, making masks, eating biscuits and drinking squash. Thank you St Barts for a brilliant morning.
In our final computing lesson of the term, the children designed their own tracks with obstacles and then programmed in algorithms so the robot could reach its destination. We worked in teams and took turns. Also while some children waited to use the physical bee bots, they went on the Bee Bot app and programmed bee bots on the ipads. Some children were on hand to agree or disagree with the algorithm and to stop the robot falling off the table!
It looks like everyone had a fab experience at curiosity time upstairs in the creative zone!
