Autumn 1

Art

This half term we’ve been building up the skills to sketch our own portraits. We used mirrors to draw our own self portrait inspired by David Hockney’s portrait work. Here are our final pieces.

Class Wide Reward

A huge well done to all children in Chayas class for reaching 100 Class Wide Rewards! The class voted to have an lego reward. Here are some of their creations.

Basketball Competition

10/10/24

10 Year 4 pupils were lucky enough to represent Walkley Primary School at a basketball competition on Thursday. They played a total of 9 matches against other schools across Sheffield coming in 7th out of 9 teams. Miss Kendall and Miss Hargreaves were very impressed by their resilience, perseverance and positivity throughout the competition. Along with some excellent shots in the hoops, the Y4s were extremely supportive of each other and showed excellent sportsmanship towards other teams. Go Walkley!

Forest School

This week has been our Forest School week. Chayas have revised their Roman Numeral understanding by using what they could find in forest school to make Roman numerals. They also worked together to complete a crack the code activity. By working out the roman numerals into numbers they were able to match them to a letter to spell out a Roman word.

Our second day outside we participated in drama, acting out both of Julius Caesars failed invasions on Britannia (Britain) in 55 and 54BC.

Roman Day – Take 2!

Today we finally welcomed a Roman centurion to Walkley who taught Y4 all about life in the Roman army. The Chayas practiced marching in formation and recreated a battle. They explored what it would be like to be an archeologist where they discovered and held old artefacts. They also enjoyed playing a range of popular games during the Roman times. Miss Kendall was having too much fun too and forgot to take pictures of us playing the games but here are the videos. Perhaps you can try making your own game and teach them to a family member. What a fun day!

Roman Day - Take 1!

Our Roman workshop day didn't quite work out as planned, owing to issues in the plant room overnight. However, our Year 4 team came to the rescue and laid on a slightly different Roman experience instead.

We enjoyed dressing in Roman-style clothes, explored modern-day Rome through photographs, formed a small Roman army and created decorative 'mosaic floors'. Here are some photographs from the day.

P.E

Chayas have been working with a partner to create balances using apparatus. Using their strong body tension and communication they were able to hold balances with increased control for 5 seconds. Chayas are really starting to grow in confidence at using the apparatus and performing in front of others.

Violins

We are very happy that violins have started back in Chayas – straight back into recapping the string names and playing to different rhythms.

Yorkshire Water

This week we had the Yorkshire Water come into school where we learnt about…you guessed it! Water! We learnt how water is cleaned and filtered so it’s ready to drink, where it comes from, how to preserve water and how to stay safe around big bodies of water. We all found this incredibly interesting and all Year 4s came away from this learning something new.

History

This week in History we learnt how the Roman Empire expanded due to its huge army. We looked at their weapons, armour and some of their tactics. We recreated ‘The Tortoise’ formation outside, acting out how the Romans would have defended themselves against barbarian attackers.

Week 1 in Chayas!

I’m so happy to finally meet you all and I’m so excited for our learning journey in Year 4!

We’ve had such a positive start to the year.

This week we have started reading Charlie and the Chocolate factory (Don’t worry our time to read our class book will come later in the year!) and what a page turner it is! We’ve found it hard to put the book down this week and we’ve had lots of rumbling bellies listening to the fantastic description by Roald Dahl.

Here are our thoughts on the book so far!
