Autumn 1

We had our final art lesson on our Ancient Egypt topic this week! We used metallic colours to match the style that Egyptians used to decorated their canopic jars, to paint our own clay canopic jars.

For our second Forest School session the Hiccups combined their History and Science knowledge! The task was to build a Shaduf, an Ancient Egyptian construction used to lift water out of the Nile, using a lever system. The children used sticks from the forest, string and cups to build their Shadufs. They then needed to find other materials to use as weights to lift their lever. They did an amazing job!

In forest school we did a maths treasure hunt! Different maths questions and answers were hidden around the forest, we needed to solve the calculation then find the right answer. Each answer had a letter which when put together spelled a secret word!

In science, we made boats with different shaped hulls to test which one travelled the fastest through water. We found that the triangle shape was the fastest because it had the least amount of water resistance, the point could cut through the water easily.

In art we have continued developing our clay modelling skills by practising making the lids for our canopic jars. We made the gods Duamatef, Hapy, Qebehsenuef and Imsety, who all have the job of protecting a different organ. Can you remember which god protects which organ?

In PE we have been developing our Netball skills. We have practised passing and defending so we are ready to learn how to shoot!

We’ve been practising our clay modelling skills in art! We had a go at making pinch pots and coil pots using techniques such as scratch and slip.

We started our Ancient Egypt topic last week by becoming detectives! The children carried out an investigation looking at evidence as to how King Tutankhamen died, we had lots of interesting theories and ideas!

Welcome to Year 5 Hiccups! We had a very exciting first week in the Hiccups class doing lots of learning and activities around our class book ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ including making dragon top trumps, map drawing and team building - protecting dragon eggs to be dropped from the window!
