Road Safety Awareness - Design a Poster Event

Tonight we held the first in a series of sessions responding to road safety concerns from children, school council, parents, governors, staff and our community. All of whom feel children’s lives are being put in danger

This is due to a minority of parents/carers/families being irresponsible with their parking.  Alongside this we have parents/carers walking up the school drive to access school through the school car park.

We also want to address protecting our children from many of the harmful gases produced by exhaust fumes.  The situation is made worse by people leaving their cars idling.

  • We have 347 pupils arriving and leaving school at the most congested times.
  • There are problems on Tennyson Road, Whitehouse Lane and Burnaby Crescent which are all residential areas.
  • There has definitely been an increase in problems on the roads and they are likely to get worse with our ever-increasing school population growth and as the new school is being built.
  • Parents are parking on corners, zig-zag lines and double parking to name but a few issues, some parents even drive onto the pavements right in front of the children.

We want to safeguard our pupils, so tonight we began to make a difference! Pupils, parents and staff began the ‘Design a Poster’ competition, whereby 2 winning designs will be made into giant posters to display on the school gates. If you couldn’t make the event last night you can still enter the competition, just complete your poster design on a sheet of A4 or A3 paper, write your name on the back and hand in to your class teacher by Friday 17th May. Good luck and get designing!

Let’s make a difference for the children and families of Walkley Primary School.
