Spring 1 Amazing America

- Week 1 -

A day later than planned but...

HAPPY NEW YEAR Y6!

And of course, a new year brings a new and exciting book...

All thirteen-year old Cameron wants is a life full of friends, swimming and family.

Most thirteen-year-olds don't also desperately need a new heart because theirs doesn't work properly.

One doctor offers hope. Cameron could - if his parents agree - take part in a radical and controversial procedure involving the transplant of a pig's heart into his human body. And it's never been done before...

While Cameron comes to terms with the idea, he finds the world around him is much, much less accepting. But surely everyone will understand that it's better to have a pig's heart that works than a human heart that doesn't - won't they...?

We have enjoyed getting our teeth stuck into our new book 'Pig Heart Boy' by Malorie Blackman. We will be studying this compelling novel in our reading lessons and using it as a stimulus for our writing units this half term. Our first write will be a diary entry written in role as the main character. This week, we revised using dashes, brackets and commas to add parenthesis (extra detail).

In Science, we rounded off our 'Light' topic exploring refraction.

- Week 2 -

In PE this half term, we are developing our gymnastics skills. Each week, we will be setting up a range of apparatus and will focus on different skills. This week, we explored different ways of travelling and balancing on the equipment.

Our current Geography topic is Amazing America. This week, we have been focusing on biomes. A biome is an area of the world  with a similar climate, flora (plants) and fauna (animals). We have been learning about the grassland biome of the American midwest. The children used i pads to research this biome and annotate their map . Well done Tygers!

In Computing, we have been exploring variables and how these are used in games.

- Week 3 -

In English, we have been exploring the controversial question: should animal organs should be used in modern medicine? After analysing examples of formal discussion texts, we took on different roles within society and participated in a debate to allow us to consider different points of view.

In Science, we have been learning about the different organs in our bodies and their role. We will be focusing on how heart and lungs work together to keep our bodies functioning!

- Week 4 -

In Music, we have been delving into the world of DISCO. This week, we have been practising playing along to 'Disco Fever'. Watch us rehearse as we up the tempo until we get to full speed!

- Week 5 -

In Science, we have been learning about the human heart and how it functions. We learnt how blood is moved around the body through a system of arteries and veins. Then, we watched Mrs Goff perform a dissection of a sheep's heart, which is anatomically similar to a human heart!

An exciting delivery arrived.....the 2025 Leavers hoodies!

- Week 6 -

This week, it was finally time to set off on our residential adventure..... Edale 2025!
