Spring 1 - Exploring the Rainforest

Week 6

Well done to our Golden Book winners of the week. You are all super stars and we are extremely proud of you!

In DT we made our brilliant boxes. We measured and drew nets, then scored, folded and stuck to create our 3D structures. We then decorated the boxes. They look fab!

We thought about how we feel when we are worried. We read the book Ruby’s Worry and made fortune tellers to help us think of strategies when we feel worried.

Week 5

Well done to our Golden Book winners of the week. You are all super stars and we are extremely proud of you!

We used the forest as the set for our rainforest weather forecasts. Although it might have been a little colder than the rainforest, we used our imaginations and gave clear and concise weather forecasts for the Amazon Rainforest.

We dissected flowers in Forest School and identified parts that help with pollination such as the anther, filament, stigma, style and ovary.

For Children’s Mental Health Week, we thought about our different emotions. We concentrated on Focus and what we needed to help us focus. We read the book, Albert’s Quiet Quest to find out strategies to help improve our focus.

In maths this week, we have been learning about division using remainders. We did a practical investigation using lollipop sticks to get used to the concept of sharing equally with something left over.

We have started our violin lessons! Today we leaned the parts of the violins and played a simple tune using our fingers to pluck the strings.

What fantastic shooting skills were on show this week in netball!

Week 4

Well done to our Golden Book winners of the week. You are all super stars and we are extremely proud of you!

In Geography we learned about the 4 layers of the rainforest and created rainforest collages to help us understand which animals live in which layer and why. We the used our new topic book, Up in the Canopy, to help us research why animals live in the different layers.

We are looking at the book, The Promise, in reading this week. We looked at the author’s description and used our vocabulary understanding to illustrate what the city would have looked like. We then expanded our vocabulary with some synonyms.

In DT we made 3D shapes using paper. We then tested 3D shapes to see how strong they were. Have a go trying the experiement at home!

In netball we have been learning passing techniques, including a chest pass and a shoulder pass.

Week 3

Well done to our Golden Book winners of the week. You are all super stars and we are extremely proud of you!

Our trip to the library gave us a lovely opportunity to explore books and develop our love of books! We had a wonderful time and hope that all of the children will continue to visit the library and take out books to read at home.

This week we are having a 'Brilliant Boxes' project week in DT. We are intending to make a trinket box for ourselves to keep all of our most precious objects.

We started off by learning about 3D shapes and how to construct them. We made nets and experiemented building with different contraction sets.

In maths we have been learning how to multiply two digit numbers. We used the base 10 with a sprinkle of teamwork to help us become confident mathematicians.

Our next write will be our achievement reports. To help refresh our memories we looked through our class blog to remember all of the fantastic learning that we have already done. It was so much fun to reminisce! I strongly urge you to do it too!

In reading, we have continued practising our fluency with some reading theatre. We practised a page of The Lorax so that we could read smoothly and with expression. We then performed to the class.

Week 2

Well done to our Golden Book winners of the week. You are all super stars and we are extremely proud of you!

This week in reading, we are looking at the Lorax and learning about reading with expression. We have looked at the rhythm of the poem and how to read with an entertaining voice. We read out loud with our partners and read with fluency and emphasis. Have a dnace along with 'Don't read like a robot' for some extra practice.

Yo nerds, drop the robot act! You gotta read with expression. You also gotta sing, dance, and get down to this Blazer Fresh song! #GoNoodle #BlazerFresh Want to check out more FREE videos like this? Visit GoNoodle.com to unlock tons of features that kids (and adults) love!

To help secure our understanding of using speech in narratives, we worked together to unscramble sentences in English. We ordered the words, added the punctuation and read the sentences to check that they made sense

We have also been working really hard at finishing our computing projects this week. We composed pieces of music that we thought would fit the mood of Mariokart and then changed the tempo to suit the different clips that we used. I have compiled all of the projects into one clip and I'm sure you will agree that they fit to the clip very well! Some amazing compositions!

The Borrowers have been learning how to multiply two-digit numbers using practical resources. We nailed it! Well done Borrowers.

Week 1

We have started a new year with the amazing book, The Tin Forest, which is one of our Y3 recommended reads. This morning we listened to the description on the first page and visualised what the setting would look like.

We got out the equipment in gymnastics and learned how to safely travel and move between equipment.

In science, we conducted an experiment using light and shadow.

In PE we focused on fresh air and fun! We worked together to safely play in the snow and build structures.

We read the rest of our text, The Tin Forest, and practiced reading in groups to improve our expression and fluency. We then performed to the class in Reader’s Theatre.

As we ran out of time last term, we have been working really hard to finish our Frida Kahlo inspired portraits. We painted a moody background and then added detail to the foreground. You can find the finished portraits in the PDF attached underneath.
