Week 4
In our History lessons, we have been learning about the Anglo - Saxons, who mercilessly pushed the brave Britons ( especially the Welsh) back towards the west. The children were learning about the Anglo - Saxon alphabet, the Futhork and using the Runes to write messages that they had to translate. Also, a favourite thing to do in the evening was solve riddles, so the children were given a few ones to solve.
In the children's textiles lesson with Mr Gamage , the children have used their sewing skills to create these beautiful birds. See below for Isla's peacock.
Week 3
Charlies performed their kennings poems for the class this week. A kennings is structured so that each line has two words, either a noun and a verb or a noun and a noun. The poem is a puzzle, with the clues describing someone or something. The poems we performed were a description of Grendel, the beast in the Beowulf story we have been reading.
Castleton 2025
Most of the Charlies enjoyed three days at the YHA in Castleton this week, being led through a series of activities by the lovely friendly, knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff of Losehill Hall. Early mornings and late nights were the order of the day, and in between there was barely time to breathe - it was busy, busy, busy! The food was great - record quantities of breakfasts were consumed (some people definitely had more than 'seconds'!), lunches kept us going during the day and dinner gave us time to reflect. We had some great feedback from the YHA staff about the children - thank you for being exemplar ambassadors for Walkley Primary School.
Those children who stayed in school joined the remaining Chayas and enjoyed a range of activities, mostly based around our reading of the Beowulf story.
A slide show of the Castleton Crew is here;
In gymnastics, we have been performing point and patch balances, leading onto developing a sequence of movements.
Spring term 2
Hello Charlies! I hope you had a great holiday. It was lovely to hear you some of you share your holiday experiences yesterday. Since you are asking, I managed to get away for a couple of days and do some decorating. I do like to live life on the edge!
This half - term our PE unit is Gymnastics. The children were practising basic gymnastic shapes, point and patch balances. As you can see from the photos below, the children look very elegant and poised.
Take a look at some of Charlies and Chayas Kenning poems all about the horrific monster Grendel from our class book Beowulf.
