Spring 2 - Spring into Life

The Bog Baby

As part of our topic 'Spring into life' The Chameleons have been reading the story 'The Bog Baby'. The story is about a young girl who finds a strange creature in a bog and brings it home to look after.

We learnt what a habitat is and talked about the different creatures that might live in specific habitats. We then were challenged to make our own habitat for the Bog Baby using resources we found around our classrooms.

Oh no! The Bog Babies went missing!

When we got to school we noticed that The Bog Babies had gone missing, we looked for clues and explored the classroom and playground to see if we could find them. The Chameleons made wanted posters to spread the word and help to find our Bog Babies, we drew pictures and wrote descriptions about what they looked like.

Phew, our Bog Babies had come back. They wrote a letter to us with photos showing what they had got up to, we enjoyed talking about all the fun they had.

What the Ladybird Heard

To continue our Spring into life topic we read What the Ladybird Heard, a story about a Ladybird who helps stop two robbers from stealing the fine prize cow on the farm.

What the Ladybird Heard | Animated read along story for children

"What the Ladybird Heard" is an enchanting tale that captivates young readers and takes them on a thrilling adventure filled with fun, friendship, and farmyard secrets. With vivid illustrations by Lydia Monks, this delightful storybook is sure to capture the imaginations of children and adults alike.

Milkshakes

We learnt about how milk goes from the farm to cartons in our fridge. From milking the cows, to cleaning and processing the milk we explored the full process, after all that learning we needed something refreshing so we made banana milkshakes.

First we had to peel and cut the bananas, then pour in the milk before blending it together. Next we had the best part trying out our banana milkshake and finally we washed up our own cups.

Butter making

We continued learning about dairy and found out about how butter is made. We then had a go at making our own, first we poured cream into a jam jar, then we shook the jar. The cream was getting thicker and thicker and all of a sudden the buttermilk came out and we were left with butter. After cleaning the butter we enjoyed it on a slice of bread.

The Odd Egg

Looking at Spring and new life we read 'The Odd Egg' a story about a duck who finds a strange egg.

The Odd Egg - A 'lift the flap' felt book as we search for Easter eggs with Spot and his friend Helen. This children's book is read out loud in English, in an Australian accent. This book is suitable for babies right up to adults!

We all became paleontologists and learnt about fossils. First we found out that a fossil is the remains of animals and plants from millions of years ago, then we looked out what tools paleontologist use when they are looking at fossils. In forest school we practiced our map reading to find and then draw fossils that have been hidden, we used team work with our partners and landmarks to find all the fossils.

DT

In DT this term we are making different creatures using a range of materials.

We started the term making our very own 'Bog Baby' out of clay. We used our hands to roll and shape the clay and then added detail using different tools. We then decorated our 'Bog Baby' using googly eyes, feathers and sticks.

The Chameleons were challenged to make different minibeasts out of junk modeling. They could use any of the materials they could see and they even made requests for specific resources. They shared resources with partners, took turns to use different tools and explained their plans before building.

Card making

We made seasonal cards to give to our grownups for Mothers Day and Easter. We followed step by step instructions and then wrote our messages in the cards. We practiced our fine motor skills by cutting out all of the individual pieces and got messy using finger paints to make sheep patterns.

Fossil making

To carry on our work being a paleontologist we practiced our printing skills making fossils out of clay in forest school. First we rolled out our clay into a ball and then flattened it using our hands. We then picked if we wanted to make a dinosaur or a shell fossil and then pressed it into the clay printing the design in the clay.

PSED

Right and Wrong Choices

The Chameleons were given different questions and then had to move to show their opinions. We started with chocolate vs biscuits and then moved up to looking at right or wrong choices. They were asked if it was the right choice to not tell her parents she was going to the bog, the Chameleons said their reasons and some of us were convinced and changed side.

Taking care of others

We read the story 'The King of Tiny things' we thought of ways that we can describe the King and we said he was kind and helpful. We discussed different ways that we could show kindness to our friends at school and how we can be helpful. We also went up to forest school to learn how we can be kind to minibeasts by making a bug hotel. We all collected resources and helped build a bug hotel in the playground.

Listening Walk

We put on our listening ears and quietly walked all over the school trying to hear all the sounds in the school. We heard splashing water in Nursery, children doing partner work, balls bouncing, doors closing and lots more. When we got back to the class room we then wrote down a sound that we heard on our walk.

World Book Day

Everyone was very excited for World Book Day and we had a very busy day filled with lots of stories and books. We had the whole class dressed up as one of their favourite book characters or in their cosy clothes to read a book in. Then we read Press here by Hervé Tullet before working together and writing our own version of the book. In the afternoon the Borrowers class came down to read to us and we had a go and reading our phonics book to them and finally we had a quite reading time in the book cafe to explore some new books and have a snack.

Red Nose Day

To celebrate Red Nose Day everyone came in wearing their red clothes and funny hair. We then had the Chameleon Comedy Club where everyone had the opportunity to come up to the front and tell a joke to the whole class. Outside there was a treasure hunt to find a secret code word hidden in red noses.
