This week the children came to school to find a golden egg in the classroom. They had to guess what was in the egg before reading the story 'The Odd Egg'. Later in the week, they learnt about which animals lay eggs through researching with non-fiction books. They loved drawing what they had found and then thought about what they would like to find out next. We also decided to make our own egg. Using papier mache and lots of PVA glue, the children worked collaboratively to make the egg throughout the week.
We went on a treasure hunt to Forest School using a map of the school grounds. The children had to follow the 'x' marks the spot and record what they had found including; a dinosaur egg, some fossils and some dinosaur books.
After learning about what fossils are we decided to make our own fossils so we can hide them for our friends and dig them up like paleontologists. The children modelled clay and used shells and dinosaur bones to make imprints.

Maths
Continuing with our Mastering Number journey the children have been ordering numbers to 8, making staircase patterns and accurately counting out 8 objects. They loved using the Number blocks stamps to make their patterns.
We have been making Number Block 7 and finding out how many ways we can make 7 using different parts. E.g. 5 + 2 = 7.

We used 20 ones to arrange them into groups to make it easier to subitise.
Dentist Visit
As we have been enjoying Toothbrush Club for a few weeks we had a special visitor from the NHS to talk to us about the importance of brushing teeth. The children knew lots already but also learnt that snails have more teeth than crocodiles! Thank you Rachel for coming to visit us and provide all our Toothbrush Club resources.

Understanding the World - The Farm
In the classroom we looked at some non-fiction books to research about farm animals. We had a discussion about what we had found and then came up with some questions of what we want to find out next. The next day, we had a fantastic trip to Ian's Mobile Farm. We met Daisy the Fiberglass Cow and lots of other animals. We had a go at brushing the goats, milking the cow and brushing the ponies, but most of all we loved chasing and playing with Meg the sheepdog.

Farm research
After learning about what food farm animals can make, we made our own butter by shaking double cream vigorosuly. The children were able to spread the butter using a knife on to bread and of course taste test it afterwards!

Spring Flowers
We have been talking about growing and how in Spring, lots of flowers appear. We have planted Spring bulbs using compost and water and are looking forward to watching them grow. Later on in class we decided to paint some of the spring flowers. First the children had to mix the paint using the primary colours before using different textured brushed to create the flowers.

We had a great time celebrating World Book Day. We talked about a new author, Nadia Shireen and drew cartoon animals. We read lots of books and enjoyed a reading time together. We voted for our favorite class story and had a great discussion about why.

Author Visit
The Caterpillars absolutely loved having author and illustrator Bethan Woollvin into school to do a drawing workshop with us. She read her book 'Robin Hood' with us then taught us how to draw Robin from the story.

Class Wide Reward
We celebrated by decorating biscuits using chocolate and mini eggs.
We enjoyed Red Nose Day. We played 'pin the nose on the teacher', completed a taskmaster challenge of getting a nose on without hands and designed our own Red Noses. We had a great day raising money for charity. Thank you for your generous donations.
Walkley Primary School are taking part in Burnaby Cub; Growing with Pride. We drew on leaves something we love about Yorkshire and then went to meet Rich Wells to stick our leaves to the cub, ready to be found in Sheffield over the summer.
