Summer 1

Week 1

In English we will be writing a nonsense poem based on the sublime, "The Owl And The Pussy-Cat" by Edward Lear. Here are the class looking at suffixes and matching them to their root word.

Geography: Coasts and Oceans

In Geography, we have been learning about the UK coast. We have been learning key vocabulary such as harbour, docks, port, cliffs, beach and esplanade. We looked at satellite images and maps of Dover, Hull and the fishing town of Crail and identified key features. We also watched this brilliant short film in Weymouth where we saw what happens in a town by the sea.

In Citizenship, the children looked at the importance of keeping your personal information private and not to be shared online. We did an activity where we decided what information was ok to be shared and which must be kept private. We also talked about how it is always so important to ask a trusted adult if you are not sure.

In PE we had a great yoga session today where the children impressed us all with their core strength, breathing and flexibility! We learnt 6 positions: The dolphin, the turtle, the seal, the boat, the jellyfish and the star fish! Afterwards, we had a bit of time for cosmic kids ninja turtle yoga which we all enjoyed!

In maths, we are doing statistics this week. We have looked at tally charts, pictographs, block graphs and bar charts. Here is a great song we have enjoyed watching and listening to!

In English we have focused on some key grammar before beginning to plan and write our poem inspired by "The Owl And The Pussy-Cat." Here are the class using great oracy skills to explain opinions, discuss and work together to match rhyming words and decide if sentences are commands, questions or statements.

In DT we built paper prototypes of our hand puppet designs. We learnt that prototypes are used by designers to spot mistakes and to simplify designs. Many of us have realised that we will need to make the template of our hand a little larger to accommodate the stitching and that our designs may be a bit complicated to make in 3D. The next step for us is to learn how to sew a running stitch and then make our puppet for real out of felt and thread.

On Fridays in PE, our topic for this term is "Athletics". We will learn how to run faster, jumper longer, hurdle and throw javelins! In this lesson we focused on how to sprint by using the balls of our feet, using long strides and moving our arms from pocket to mouth. The children had a great time playing the run chase game!

Week 2

In citizenship, we are continuing to learn and discuss about being safe on the internet. The children were very knowledgeable about not sharing private information and always asking an adult if they are feeling worried. The children have enjoyed watching the "Jessie And Her Friends" short animations that teach us about sharing information and keeping passwords safe.

In geography, we got the atlases out and tried to locate the 5 oceans of our planet. We learnt that oceans contain salt water and that some oceans are made up of many seas. A lot of us wanted to go to the Indian Ocean as it is the warmest!

Five Oceans Song

Great puppet making!

In yoga this week we went on a "safari" and learn moves such as the Lion, Giraffe and Elephant. Once again the children were excellent at holding their positions, breathing and encouraging each other. Also a special thanks to Mr Rist for helping one child be involved in our session. Near the end of the lesson, we did some Sonic the hedgehog yoga too!

In music, we continued to have our recorders lessons where we followed music using B, A and G. We also had opportunities to improvise and create our own music!

We Will Rock You!

In computing, the children were shown a series of commands on the programming app, Scratch Jr and were asked to predict what the outcomes would be. After that, they made these programmes on the ipads to see if their predictions were correct. The children were full of confidence and could explain the sequences very well as they had a good idea of what each programming icon could do.

Today the Hodgehegs got a chance to explore our new sensory play area. We enjoyed the sun, read out our poems and had a good read!

In DT we learnt how to sew a running stitch. We worked with a partner and tried to keep a straight line. This newly learnt skill will be invaluable when we start to make our puppets with felt next week!

We have enjoyed exploring our new sensory yard.

In athletics today we focused on the long jump from a standing start. We learnt about bending out legs and having our hands behind us ready to swing when jumping to create more power and momentum. We also jumped from a running position to hurdle and did some side steps too.

Week 3

In our recorder lesson the children did a fab job learning a new song and trying to read the notes!

In yoga today we learnt some "Farm" moves such as the cow, the tractor and the cat.

Today we had the pleasure of visiting Madina Mosque. Mr Zahid was a wonderful host who kindly guided us through the wudu room, the library and the incredible prayer rooms. We had a lovely time and got to share our knowledge of Islam.

In computing we learnt how to start a code by touching the main sprite in the programme and how to change the background. The children watched a film of a finished animation. The children then worked out how to progamme and make this animation. Here they are doing an excellent job.

Wonderful geography going on in the creative zone. The children really enjoyed watching the videos of South Road and other areas of Walkley.

In English, we are starting a new topic, recounting the fable,"The Tortoise and the Hare." Here are the class working together to make character posters and expanding their vocabulary.

We decided to take our reading buddies, the Y5 class, to the new woodland cabin area to do some reading and swap good stories!

In athletics today, we focused on the skill of the high jump from a standing position. The children were excellent at bending down and using their arms to improve the power of their jump to clear various bars. We also revised the long jump, sprinting and hurdling.

Week 4

In the creative provision and in our sensory yard, great fine and gross motor skills were happening and being encouraged!

Time - BBC Bitesize Foundation Maths and numeracy

In Y2 we have been learning how to tell the time. Please ask your child about o'clock, half past, quarter to and quarter past.

In computing we made quizes using the Scratch Jr app. We got to choose the chartacters in our animation and the background. We built algorithms to start the programme by touching a sprite, ask a quiz question and then if the answer was correct, the background would change and move to the next level in the quiz. Fab work all!

Silly Symphony - The Tortoise and the Hare

In English, we are starting to write our own version of the "Tortoise and the Hare" fable. Here is a great version of the story made by Walt Disney!

In athletics today we focused on throwing accurately. We also revised jumping high and long. Finally, we watched examples of throwing from the olympics such as the javelin and the shot put.

Week 5

In maths we have been learning about how to measure in centimetres and metres. We now know that 1m = 100 cm and that our classroom is 10 metres long! Here are the class measuring small items with their 30cm rulers and longer items with a metre stick or two, or ten!

In recorders we have been learning a new song "Mary had a little lamb." We also loved doing the Grandma rap! We look forward to performing these to parents at our concert in July.

In computing we made our quizes. We came up with our own questions, chose which sprites to use and chose our own backgrounds. The chidren were very good at programming their animations to start with a interactive touch, change backgrounds once a sprite had explained the correct answer and some even added voice and sound effects!

We have just finished another great book as a class. Narwhall and Jelly Jolt is a funny story about a narwhal and his friend wishing to become super heroes but struggling to come up with their own super powers. It's a great story about friendship and kindness. Most of us gave it a 10 out 10!

Week 6

We have been weighing different objects in Maths today! We enjoyed using the scales and using language such as heavier and lighter. Later this week we will use grams(g) and kilograms (kg) to measure mass.

In forest school this week we have been measuring places and objects with measuring wheels and rulers, making bug hotels, taking photos of the signs of summer and doing an obstacle course. We all really enjoyed the sunshine and occasional showers!

Living in a port city - Cardiff and Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea | Geography - Your World

In geography, we have continued our "Oceans" topic by looking at 2 cities next to a port. One is next to the Atlantic Ocean and the other can be found in the Pacific Ocean. The children really enjoyed this short film where we follow 2 children. One lives in Cardiff in the UK and the other lives in Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. The children were excellent at looking at similarities and differences with how the children lived and identifying key physical and human features in both places.

The children voted for a "Cat reward" for our class reaching 100 points. Here are the gang doing cat art, watching the magnificent film, "Flow" and getting their faces painted!
