Summer 1

Jack and the Beanstalk

The Chameleons have been reading the traditional tale Jack and the Beanstalk, we discussed that traditional tales might not always be the same and each version has its own author and its own differences.

We sequenced the story and retold it using actions and voices.

We became actors and worked in small groups to make freeze frames from key parts of the story. We worked as a team to fairly assign roles then created our freezes, we also thought about what our character might say or think.

Planting Beanstalks

As part of our topic Let it Grow and the celebrate Jack and the Beanstalk, the Chameleons planted beanstalks. We read a non fiction book about growing plants to learn what we need to do to help the seed germinate.  We scooped compost into our pots made a whole to put our seed in then covered it over. We are making sure to water the plants reguarly to help them grow.

Design and Tecnology

In DT, the Chameleons formed groups and were set the task of building a beanstalk out of junk modeling. Their mission was for it to be strong and sturdy so that it could hold the giants hen and not fall over due to the wind.

They formed groups and their first task was to create their team name, then they had to work together to make a plan for their beanstalk, drawing their blueprints and writing a list of what they need.

Next the groups had to use their plans to construct their beanstalks trying to make them as stable as possible.

Maths

Measure

The Chameleons spent the week looking at different kinds of measure and comparing two objects using our measure vocabulary. We found giant footprints and compared long and short. Then we looked at objects that are tall and short and found out which of our talk partners was taller and shorter. We used scaled to compare the weight of objects using heavier and lighter. Finally we looked at the capacity of vessels using full, nearly full, half full/half empty, nearly empty and empty.

Forest School

In forest school this week the Chameleons were focusing on bees from our book, When the Bees Buzzed Off. Our first task was making wild flower seed bombs to make more flowers so that we get more local bees. We followed instructions and got our hands very messy in the process.

We then became bees and flew around on a Nectar Relay Race. We had to fly around the forest school and collect nectar using a pipet and bring it back to the hive to put in their teams cup.

The Chameleons also played groups games to learn more about Bees. We played stuck in the mud using bees and their predators trying to catch them, as well as Bee, Bee, Buzz (duck, duck, goose) where they were flying back to the safety of their hive.

Back in the classroom, we completed a traverse to share our ideas on the best way to help minibeasts, we listened to each of our partners to gain lots of new ideas.
