Summer 1 - Groovy Greeks

Week 6

Well done to our Golden Book winners of the week. You are all super stars and we are extremely proud of you!

This week we have finished off our amazing Delita Martin inspired prints. We had an extremely busy afternoon combining all of the skills that we have learned in printing this term. We first mono-printed our Greek God or Goddess. We then designed both a print block and a print relief which we used as an overlay. Our artworks are incredible and look so professional! Please take a look!

We put all of our tennis learning together and played doubles today. Great teamwork Borrowers!

In Maths, we opened different shops to help us find change. We used pounds to pay and then calculated our change using a number line.

Week 5

Well done to our Golden Book winners of the week. You are all super stars and we are extremely proud of you!

In English, we have finished our retelling of the Greek myth Gaia: Goddess of Earth. We worked with our editing partners and used our pathways to make our writing even more impressive in our editing session.

In citizenship, we used our Oracy skills to discuss online safety. We sorted the personal information into what is safe to share online and what isn’t.

Week 4

Well done to our Golden Book winners of the week. You are all super stars and we are extremely proud of you!

Today we had our metal embossing workshop. We used Greek motifs to make our designs and then used tools to create our art work.

In tennis we have been working on tracking our opponents. We followed their movements and took turns to return the ball.

In English we worked together to unscramble the sentences based on our book Gaia: Goddess of Earth.

In art this week we learned how to make relief prints. Use this link to try it out at home.

We enjoyed reading some of our new recommended reads in the reading hut outside this afternoon.

In Citizenship, we read the book 'One Plastic Bag' and learned about the activism of Isatou Ceesay. We then thought about how we could recycle and made mini books using scrap paper. Have a go at home!

One Plastic Bag: Isatou Ceesay and the Recycling Women of the Gambia | read-aloud

In Njau, Gambia, plastic bags accumulated in ugly heaps alongside roads. Water pooled in them, bringing mosquitoes and disease. Some bags were burned, leaving behind a terrible smell. Some were buried, but they strangled gardens. They killed livestock that tried to eat them. Something had to change. Isatou Ceesay was that change.

Week 3

Well done to our Golden Book winners of the week. You are all super stars and we are extremely proud of you!

Happy Greek Day!

We have had an amazing Greek Day as part of out history topic! As well as learning all about Sparta and Athens and the battle of Troy, we created artwork based on Ancient Greek pottery.

In Maths, we have been learning how to find fractions of amounts. We used counters or drawings to work out our answers.

In guided reading we have been continuing to read the Greek myths. This week we looked at a graphic novel style of book. We summarised the 12 tasks of Heracles in our own comics.

In English, we have started a new book, Gaia Goddess of the Earth. We have been working on our Social and Emotional Oracy skills with a focus on collaboration. We started by drawing what Gaia’s creation looked like using a ‘Fed in Facts’ activity.

Week 2

Well done to our Golden Book winners of the week. You are all super stars and we are extremely proud of you!

We have started printing skills this week for our artwork focusing on printmaker, Delita Martin. We started with monoprinting and linked this with our work on Greek Myths by using images of the ferocious Minotaur! Use the link to have so at home

How to mono-print, No sound, visual only.

Updated video can be found here -https://youtu.be/k5lcn69M0V8 How to mono print! You will need- a plastic or glass tile, block printing ink, roller, paper and masking tape. Only use a dab of ink at first, you can always add more. Roll out ink. You want a nice even layer of ink.

We worked on our Oracy skills using our ‘Connect Backpack’ and did some collaboratively creative drawing. We worked on mirror drawing and gave clear instructions as to what we wanted our partner to draw.

In PE we are working on our racket skills in tennis. We practised hitting our ball our partners so that they could return it. We moved our feet to be able to return the ball and watched the ball as it came towards us to improve our accuracy.

Week 1

Well done to our Golden Book winners of the week. You are all super stars and we are extremely proud of you!

In English we have started learning about the Greek myths with the story of Medusa. We read the myth together and then worked in teams to act out the beginning of the myth.

Today we had our first whole class debate. We thought really carefully about whose fault it was that Medusa was cursed. We then used our amazing Oracy skills to build on each other’s ideas and challenge each other. It’s a long watch but well worth it!

In Citizenship we were focusing on finding our strength from within. We listened to the Sia song Unstoppable and wrote our own affirmations to give us positive words when we are feeling challenged.

We continued our Oracy focus with a Back to Back activity in English. We described what Medusa looked like for our partner to draw. We had to think really carefully about using clear and descriptive language to give our partners as much detail as possible.

In Maths, we explored volume and capacity practically. We worked out the scales of different containers and explored the capacities of these.
