It started with a feast, then involved party games with lots of laughing. Some of us hadn't been to a party in ages. We had loads of fun. Then we finished with some party snacks. Happy Christmas Everyone!

It's the last week and the it's been very festive in the Anansi class! We have been up to the Creative zone again this week to make our calendars and start thinking about the new year and the seasons. The children were very creative and got stuck in!
In maths this week we have been practicing our understanding of repeating patterns and have been making and describing our own patterns using 3D shapes. This Numberblocks episode is great practice for identifying patterns. Watch it here

We have been getting chrismassey in Anansi this week and have been learning about the Christmas story as part of our topic on Stories and Celebrations. The children made puppets and used these to act out the nativity.
In maths this week we have been looking at shape and have been helping each other to learn the names of common 3D and 2D shapes, and then having a go at sorting them out. The children were very impressive at using their shape vocabulary and supporting each other to learn some new mathematical language.
Some of the Anansi children are working on Speed Sounds in Read Write Inc and have made brilliant progress in learning their sounds and using Fred Talk to aid their blending and Fred Fingers to help their segmenting.
This week we were looking at the sound f so we drew a picture of our very own Fred Frog and used our best Fred Talk to write his name.

This week started off with a surprise snow day! I missed being in school with all of you but I love snow! I hope you all had as much fun as I did!
This week the Anansi class visited our creative zone! This is the first time that they have used this space and they were so amazingly grown up and sensible. They used the materials and resources carefully and it was lots of fun. We will definitely be using the creative zone lots more in the future! Don't ask the children what they were doing though... It's top secret!
In maths this week, we are focusing on consolidating what we have been learning about addition and subtraction. We looked at different calculations and discussed the methods needed to solve addition and subtraction calculations. Some of the children then went on to compare calculations using mathematical language such as more than, less than or equal to. They really are addition and subtraction experts!

This week the Anansi children have been continuing their learning about subtraction and have been finding the difference between amounts. We used blocks and Numicon to show how amounts were different and then used mathematical language to explain which one had more, and how many more.

We are moving on with our topic on Autumn and Winter Celebrations with more of an in depth look at Christmas and Christian beliefs. This week we looked at Christian Churches and identified the important elements of a church. The children then used different construction materials to build their own churches. They all have an amazing future in architecture!

In science, we have continued our learning about the human body and have been discussing our joints and what they are used for. The children worked together to make skeletons and then we created actions to remember what our elbows, knees, ankles and wrists are for.

Congratulations to our Award Winners this week! You are all amazing and we are incredibly proud of you!
As part of our learning about Autumn and Winter festivals we have been learning about Hannukah. We each made a candle and then placed them together with the 'helper' candle in the middle to create menorahs. The candles would work really nicely with a tea light inside.

This week in maths we have moved on from addition to subtraction. We have listened to and sang subtraction songs and have used concrete resources to show that subtracting means that you are getting less. The children have made a fantastic start and are proving that MATHS IS EASY!!!

This week , we have creating our own musical fireworks display using our voices, body language and musical instruments. Please watch the video to see this sizzling Fireworks display.

Popcorn poem
As part of our Creative Curriculum, we have been acting out a popcorn poem. After this, the children drew some pictures to represent the lines of the poem.
In Anansi this week we have been continuing our work on celebrations and have talked lots about the fireworks displays that we saw over the weekend. We then created fireworks art on the iPads to practice using backgrounds and effects.
We have also started structured reading lessons with the class where we look at a story and then discuss it in detail. This week we have been looking at the fastastic book, 'The Best Divali Ever' by Sonali Shah.
We read and discussed the book and then acted out the key events in freeze frames. The children were brilliant at getting into role.

Y1A: Bonfire Night
We have learnt the famous song from Bonfire Night! Watch out for those fireworks this weekend!
I hope everyone had a restful week off. The Anansi class have come back full of energy and ready to learn! In maths this week we have been looking at number bonds to 10 and how to show them in different ways. The children have used lots of different maths resources and are becoming confident and fluent in reciting their number bonds to 10.
This episode of Number Blocks has a great song to really consolidate those bonds to 10. You can find it here.
In our Creative Curriculum we are continuing with our learning about autumn and winter celebrations. We looked at some pretty amazing fireworks displays and then created fireworks art using a dot technique. If you want to do anymore fireworks themed art there is a link to some ideas here.
