Summer 2 Extreme Earth

Week 7

We have finished off our extreme Earth topic by creating posters about earthquakes. We presented facts and worked in teams to create informative posters. 

In conputing, we used Scratch to make music. We used the 'repeat' block to make repetitive phrases and melodies. Use this link to have a go at home.

In English we have been reading poetry and working on our performance skills. We read the poem 'Kingfisher' from The Lost Words and practised reading aloud in front of an audience.

In guided reading we have finished reading The Iron Man. We really enjoyed all of the fantastic descriptions of the Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon and of the Iron Man's challenge. We compared the text with The Paper Bag Princess (one of my all time favourites) to discuss the similarities and differences between the challenges set in the book.

In PE this week, we have been practising our aim and trying to throw with accuracy. We started with hoops and then challenged our selves with the smaller targets of cones.

A HUGE thank you to all of the parents that attended our art showcase. It was a wonderful event and so special to celebrate the children's achievements with all of you. They have all worked so hard in art and now you have seen the amazing outcomes!

In Reading we have continued our reading of The Iron Man. We used our forest school time to sketch the Iron Man as well as reading in the shade. 

In PE we are getting sports day ready with some jumping practice. We practised leaping, hopping and jumping to see how far we could go.

Week 3

Thank you to the children that have been bringing in fossils and other types of rocks to support our learning. We have loved hearing you talk about them!

In Geography we have been learning about techtonic plates. We created a tectonic plate jigsaw and placed it on water to show how the plates can shift and rub together, causing Earthquakes. Check out this link to learn more. 

In maths this week, we have been learning about money. We have made amounts in different ways and coverted pounds and pence. 

In Citizenship, we have been celebrating Pride  Month by celebrating our differences and the things that make us who we are. We read the book Llama Glamarama and then drew pictures in our heart maps of the things that are significant and help to make us who we are. 

The Borrowers celebrated achieving another Class Wide Reward party by using the PE equipment in the hall. We had a great time climbing and traversing!

Week 2

We have been doing some amazing coding using Scratch in computing. We have learned how to program a sprite to change it's costume, move and play sounds. 

In reading, we have been working on our summarising skills. We created a timeline of the journey of the pebble so far and then wrote captions to recoard key events in the history of the natural Earth. 

In English, we have been learning how to use subordinating conjunctions to help us write clear sentences about Mary Anning. We used scrambled sentences and worked together to join a main clause and a subordinate clause using a conjunction.

In Geography, we have been learning about the different layers that make up the Earth. We created plastercine models and then cut them in half to see how our Earth is made of multiple layers.

In reading this week, we have been thinking about how to be successful practice partners. We developed rules for us to follow and started working on shared reading.

In English, we have started learning about Mary Anning, using the brilliant book Stone Girl, Bone Girl. We used drama to create freeze frames to infer how she might have felt when she first discovered fossils.

In maths, we have been learning to add fractions. We split whole objects apart and then added the numerators to give us different amounts.
