  • Walkley Primary School new build update 14/02/20

Fri 14 Feb 2020 Mr Wallis

We continue to see excellent progress this week with the completion of the haulage road, the commencement of piling foundations and the completion of the site compound.

On site you will have seen a very impressive piling rig. This construction machine is being used for piling in foundation engineering. Installing a bored pile starts with drilling a vertical hole into the soil in the all-weather pitch, using a bored piling machine. Once the hole is drilled, a structure of reinforcing steel, which has been made off site, will be lowered into the hole, then the hole is filled with concrete. Altogether there are 101 piling holes to drill and fill with steel and concrete to hold up the new school building. Interserve's sub-contractors have already drilled 17 this week.

Interserve have established their site compound for the construction team so there will be some changes forthcoming at the top of the haulage road over the coming weeks. It will be interesting to see how the site has developed over the half term holiday.

Once again, thank you for your patience during the construction of our new school. If you have comments, queries or concerns, do please contact Interserve directly at jack.broomhead@interserve.com or alternatively you can contact us at enquiries@walkley.sheffield.sch.uk to pass on your messages.

  • The Whole School Learning Log - Spring Half Term

Wed 12 Feb 2020 Mr Wallis

Preparing for our New School Topic: ‘The Little Bears Trail’ and ‘The Walkley Primary School Time Capsule’

    The Little Bears Trail

A one-metre-tall bear sculpture is being delivered to our school and we’d like you to help design and decorate it.  The decorated Walkley bear sculpture will be exhibited in a city-wide trail this summer and then returned to us to be placed in its very own garden in our new school.

    The Walkley Time Capsule

As Walkley families we are asking for your ideas and contributions for our time capsule too. The time capsule is likely to be a in a secure, watertight container and should represent Walkley Primary School and incorporate local, national and world events in 2020.

Our Learning Log for this half term can be completed by all our pupils. They are available on your child's class page. Please return your ideas and designs to your class teacher by 28th February.

  • The Walkley Primary School Time Capsule

Fri 07 Feb 2020 Mr Wallis

We just cannot believe how quickly the work toward the new building is progressing. The time is getting close for us to be preparing a time capsule to place behind a specially placed stone in the fabric of the new building.

A time capsule is a container that holds present day items, such as photos, newspapers, letters and more. It’s typically hidden away for your future self or someone of your choosing to open.  The container stores a selection of objects chosen as being typical of the present time, buried for discovery for the future.

In this case, we plan to keep it safely stored for 100 years and then pupils in 2120 can open the capsule to find out more about how we lived.  A time capsule is also a historic cache of goods or information, usually intended as a deliberate method of communication with future people, and to help future archaeologists, anthropologists, or historians.

Potential Items that can be included into the capsule are:

    • The latest newsletter
    • Photographs.
    • A book with a special note
    • A technological item
    • Letters
    • School Uniform

As Walkley families we are asking for your ideas and contributions. The time capsule is likely to be a in a secure, watertight container and should represent Walkley Primary School and incorporate local, national and world events in 2020.  We will have three containers full of our ideas.  All ideas welcome………….

NOMINATING ITEMS TO GO INTO THE TIME CAPSULES WILL BE PART OF THE HALF TERM LEARNING LOG COMPETITION ALONGSIDE DESIGNING THE BEAR COMPETITION.  DETAILS TO FOLLOW NEXT WEEK
  • The Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity - Bear Trail 2020

Fri 07 Feb 2020 Mr Wallis

We are very excited to announce that we are taking part in the Little Bears of Sheffield Sculpture Trail 2020, in support of The Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity.  The project involves the purchase of a 1 metre tall bear sculpture, that our pupils will then create a design for, to be used to decorate the bear.  The sculpture will then be taken to be exhibited in a city-wide bear trail during summer 2020.  At the end of the trail, the bear will be returned to school for us to keep, which we plan to incorporate into the design of our brand new school landscape. Working alongside Interserve, the contractor building our new school, we will aim to incorporate the bear in its very own bear garden.

We would like you to help us fundraise for this project. This will enable us to purchase the bear and help fund a brand new cancer and leukemia ward for babies through to 19 year olds at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.  Our target for funding the project is £750.

    How you can help

    • Bring your fundraising ideas to Friday morning drop-ins with Mrs Jinkinson and Mr Clements
    • Come along to the next Friends of Walkley meeting
    • Organise your own fundraising projects out of school and donate the cash

Information regarding how we are going to involve pupils with the design for the bear will be coming out shortly.

  • Walkley Primary School new build update 07/02/20

Fri 07 Feb 2020 Mr Wallis

I'm sure you have seen and are well aware of the progress this week with the completion of the haulage road including the tarmacking of the road on Friday.

Very soon Interserve will be adding the stone to the designated pavements aside the road, and now that the road is complete they will be establishing their site compound for the construction team and continuing their preparations for the piling to be added to the former all-weather pitch.

Once again, thank you for your patience during the construction of our new school. If you have comments, queries or concerns, do please contact Interserve directly at jack.broomhead@interserve.com or alternatively you can contact us at enquiries@walkley.sheffield.sch.uk to pass on your messages.
