• Friendship and Forgiveness

  I wanted to share with everyone a piece of work completed by two of our pupils during their Class-Wide Reward party this morning. They believe that friendship requires forgiveness and being a good friend to someone requires acceptance that even friends can make mistakes.

  Dear Parents and Carers,   I have had to make the very difficult decision to close the school today. The heavy snowfall overnight and this morning aligned with the freezing temperatures has made it too difficult and dangerous for many staff and families to get to school and possibly back home from school with the potential of icy roads.   We did consider a later start time but I couldn’t guarantee that even by later in the day, we would have sufficient staff able to be in school to run the school safely for our pupils.   We need to make the most of every school day so I have asked teachers to set home learning for children based on what they think children can best do at home. It will be a lighter day than normal and there should be ample time to play in the snow too. Work set by class teachers will be available on your child's Google classroom or Tapestry from 9:30am.   I’m sorry for the inconvenience the school closure may cause you but I hope you appreciate that the decision was made in the best interests of the whole school community. Thank you.

• Turkey / Syria Earthquake Appeal

  On 6th February 2023, an earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria devastating communities; destroying homes and infrastructure and tearing apart families. This has been followed by a series of powerful aftershocks and over those weeks that have followed, communities have continued to search for loved ones in the rubble left by the earthquakes and a homelessness crisis has ensued due to the shortage of safe spaces left standing. In response to a parental suggestion for how the Walkley community could help, we held a non-uniform day in school. Families were able to donate money in school which has been forwarded to the British Red Cross Turkey and Syria Earthquake Appeal.

   

  Remarkably, the Walkley Primary School community has raised a magnificent

  £1,060.94

  This has been forwarded to the British Red Cross.

• Eat them to defeat them

  EAT THEM TO DEFEAT THEM IS BACK!

   

  Walkley Primary School will be joining force with ITV and Veg Power to support the campaign to encourage children to eat more vegetables.

   

  The initiative found that ‘80% of children don’t eat enough vegetables. Over 1 million children took part last year and more than half of their parents say that the children ate more vegetables as a result. Even 35% of parents with fussy eaters, who eat next to no vegetables, said their children ate more vegetables thanks to Eat Them to Defeat Them (ETTDT).

   

  In school, each week we will have a ‘Veg of the week’ for children to try during Friday lunchtimes and everyone who gives it a go will receive a ETTDT sticker. This week, our veg of the week will be Broccoli. Each child will receive a mission pack to take home, which includes a reward chart and extra stickers to encourage them to eat more vegetables at home.

   

  The ETTDT website: (https://eatthemtodefeatthem.com) and Simply Veg website (https://simplyveg.org.uk) is full of tips, advice, meals plans/recipes and fun things for the children to do.
