  • The Coronation Capsule

Fri 26 May 2023 Mr Wallis

Today our Executive School Council planted the Coronation Time Capsule, which holds letters, artwork and photographs gifted by the pupils of 2023/2024.

A plaque marking the placement of the capsule and explaining the contents within it was also placed by the Council members today.

HH, the School Council Secretary will be writing to the future pupils of Walkley School Council who, at the marking of the next monarch coronation, will open their letter with instructions to dig up the capsule and enjoy the contents, before filling a new time capsule themselves, which has been donated by the current pupils.

  • Hold the Drama Performance for Year 4 and Year 5

Fri 26 May 2023 Mr Wallis

This morning our Y4 and Y5 pupils were treated to a drama and musical performance by 'Hold the Drama'. A company introduced to us by our Music partner Sheffield Music Hub.

In the performance, the actors/musicians played characters in a musical ensemble, displaying their emotions through the music they played and the way they acted. Central to the story were the thoughts and feelings of the individuals within the group and how they developed their ability to allow others to be who they wanted to be within the group; showcasing their own style and talent. Yes, there were ups and downs (a rollercoaster said Alfie W Y5), but by the end, they were a collective of individual styles that complimented each other to make great music that all participants could enjoy.

A great metaphor for our wonderful school and the nurturing of our friendships.

The Musicians commented on the children's incredible emotional intelligence. It was clear to see the culture of the school in our pupils' intuitive questions and comments in the discussions that followed the performance.

  • Y6s visit Madina Mosque

Fri 26 May 2023 Mr Wallis

Both Y6 classes visited the Sheffield Madina Mosque this week. This visit complemented their learning around Islam this term. During the visit the children received an in depth tour, hosted by a knowledgeable volunteer, and found out about how muslims use the mosque.  To begin with we toured the room where muslims wash in preparation for prayer.  We then visited the library and learnt about the Qu'ran before visiting the main hall where we learnt about pilgrimage and prayer.  A group of our muslim pupils demonstrated the recitation of the prayer.  We were very impressed with all the children's engagement and the insightful questions they asked.  We're also very grateful to the mosque for providing us with this authentic learning opportunity.

  • Congratulations Year 6

Fri 12 May 2023 Mr Wallis

I wanted to let you know how incredibly proud we are as a school of the endeavour and application of the pupils during their Standard Assessment Tests (SATS) this week and indeed over their time in school leading up to this point.

The tests can be a stressful time for pupils, parents and staff and the anxiety that can arise in the build up of the tests can detract from the true purpose of the tests which has always been a measure used to judge the quality of education in a school.

As you will know, at Walkley our pupils work in the ‘Learning Zone’ where they display the best characteristics of learning and respect the rights of others to the same. Our Year 6s are undoubtedly respectful of their peers’ rights and dedicated in their own work. Never more so than this week. Congratulations to all

  • A King's Coronation Capsule

Fri 05 May 2023 Mr Wallis

To mark the historic occasion of King Charles III coronation, the pupils of Walkley Primary School have been busy creating the contents for a time capsule to be planted within the grounds of the school. The children have been writing letters to future pupils of the school and producing pictures for the children to unearth in years to come. During an assembly today, the pupils presented their work to Mr Wallis who carefully, with the help of the Chair of the School Council, secured the time capsule and using gloves (to help with the preservation of the contents of the capsule) rolled and then placed the items inside.

The children's work was fantastic; fit for a King! During our assembly, we discussed what to expect from tomorrow's hugely significant coronation ceremony and when we might suggest to the future custodians of our school would be a suitable time to dig up the capsule and explore its contents.

Here are some pictures of the assembly and the children's work.
