Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
We just cannot believe how quickly the work toward the new building is progressing. The time is getting close for us to be preparing a time capsule to place behind a specially placed stone in the fabric of the new building.
A time capsule is a container that holds present day items, such as photos, newspapers, letters and more. It’s typically hidden away for your future self or someone of your choosing to open. The container stores a selection of objects chosen as being typical of the present time, buried for discovery for the future.
In this case, we plan to keep it safely stored for 100 years and then pupils in 2120 can open the capsule to find out more about how we lived. A time capsule is also a historic cache of goods or information, usually intended as a deliberate method of communication with future people, and to help future archaeologists, anthropologists, or historians.
Potential Items that can be included into the capsule are:
As Walkley families we are asking for your ideas and contributions. The time capsule is likely to be a in a secure, watertight container and should represent Walkley Primary School and incorporate local, national and world events in 2020. We will have three containers full of our ideas. All ideas welcome………….
NOMINATING ITEMS TO GO INTO THE TIME CAPSULES WILL BE PART OF THE HALF TERM LEARNING LOG COMPETITION ALONGSIDE DESIGNING THE BEAR COMPETITION. DETAILS TO FOLLOW NEXT WEEK
We are very excited to announce that we are taking part in the Little Bears of Sheffield Sculpture Trail 2020, in support of The Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. The project involves the purchase of a 1 metre tall bear sculpture, that our pupils will then create a design for, to be used to decorate the bear. The sculpture will then be taken to be exhibited in a city-wide bear trail during summer 2020. At the end of the trail, the bear will be returned to school for us to keep, which we plan to incorporate into the design of our brand new school landscape. Working alongside Interserve, the contractor building our new school, we will aim to incorporate the bear in its very own bear garden.
We would like you to help us fundraise for this project. This will enable us to purchase the bear and help fund a brand new cancer and leukemia ward for babies through to 19 year olds at Sheffield Children’s Hospital. Our target for funding the project is £750.
How you can help
Information regarding how we are going to involve pupils with the design for the bear will be coming out shortly.
I'm sure you have seen and are well aware of the progress this week with the completion of the haulage road including the tarmacking of the road on Friday.
Very soon Interserve will be adding the stone to the designated pavements aside the road, and now that the road is complete they will be establishing their site compound for the construction team and continuing their preparations for the piling to be added to the former all-weather pitch.
Once again, thank you for your patience during the construction of our new school. If you have comments, queries or concerns, do please contact Interserve directly at jack.broomhead@interserve.com or alternatively you can contact us at enquiries@walkley.sheffield.sch.uk to pass on your messages.

It has been another very productive week for the builders on site finishing the extension of the earthwork for the haul road to the new school site and preparing the trenches for the service ducting that run aside the new road to the former all weather pitch (site of our new school), These services connect the existing services to the new school site. As well as the work undertaken on the haul road, Interserve are making the necessary preparations to the ground for the construction of the new school building itself, cutting in to the surface of the all weather pitch to create the necessary Earthwork levels for the installation of the piles that will support the steelwork structure of our new school.
Very soon Interserve will be laying the curbing edges to the new road and adding tarmac to the earthwork surface, as well as making the necessary alterations to the entrance of the driveway on Burnaby Crescent.
Once again, thank you for your patience during the construction of our new school. If you have comments, queries or concerns, do please contact Interserve directly at jack.broomhead@interserve.com or alternatively you can contact us at enquiries@walkley.sheffield.sch.uk to pass on your messages.
Here are some pictures of the developments this week.
This morning Safe Sam from Interserve met the children to discuss how to stay safe around and on a building site. Our 12 Golden Citizens tried on the equipment that the workmen and women will be wearing to keep themselves safe whist at work. Safe Sam also discussed the importance of staying off building and construction sites as they are very dangerous places to play.
Thanks Safe Sam.
It has been a very productive week for the builders on site this week extending the haul road to the new school site. Earthwork is well underway, one of the major works involved in the new road construction involves the removal of topsoil, along with any vegetation and trees, between Burnaby and Tennyson, before scraping and grading the area to the required level. It's been very exciting to see the excavator and dumper trucks on site with the road already stretching down to the MUGA in preparation for the construction of the school building.
Interserve have secured the site for the new school and added barriers across Majuba Street and the path from Whitehouse Lane to avoid any further confusion on access through the building site. Thank you for your patience during the changes to these arrangements. They will remain for the foreseeable future and certainly during the construction of the new school.
